I am thinking about this RX7, is it a good price?

Alright, its a black 93 RX7. It has 155,000 miles on it and the owner says it has a small oil leak and will need tuning to pass emissions. I am guessing its on its second engine and that the engine and turbos may need to be rebuilt in the near future. It has a leather interior and it is supposed to be in really good shape. The paint is decent. He is asking $11,000. I look at www.kbb.com and it says that the retail should be more like $8,290. Should I tell him that he is asking too much or is it really worth 11k?

He also says that the tranmission is developing a notch in 5th gear, what does this mean and does that mean that I am going to have to have it rebuilt soon?

Thanks,
-Charlie

Emissions

Does the car have to pass emissions? If so, get the seller to do what it takes to make it pass emissions, or lowball your offer.

I'm buying a 93 Touring with 57K, and the seller got an emissions test done right before he put the car on the market. That will make my registration process fast and easy.

With that mileage I have to ask if this car was a daily driver for a traveling saleman whose sales region was the continential US? That's about 15K a year. Certainly wasn't a 2nd car.

And you have to think about what you want to do with the car. Are you planning on a new engine and turbos off the bat? That would change everything (including the price of the car I would think).

Hella miles... 11k seems pricy, go check it out yourself and see what you think.

You should read the 'buying a used rx-7' section of this site before buying any 3rd Gen. RX-7.
That's a high mileage car, and if you're looking at engine and transmission trouble, the price is no bargain. I think you can do much better. Even buying it at $8,000, if you have to put a new engine in it, will put you back above $11,000 and that doesn't count the time and trouble you will have spent trying to get the car into shape.

Yeah, I'd go look at it but the problem is that he is 2 states away. I wish these cars were a little more common. He claims he only drives it on weekends and that he is the second owner.

Thanks for the input guys.

How many miles did it have when he got it? When did he get it? Has it had any work done to it before? There are a BUNCH of questions/tests you need to ask/run before you can even consider buying this car. Personally, I wouldn't buy a FD (or any car, for that matter) before I test drive that very car. Just my $.02

Check Autotrader for cars

I'm seeing 3 7s (1993+) in Cinncinati, and one is priced at $13k+ with 6k on a new engine (86k total). I found no 7s locally until I used autotrader, and then I had 15 to choose from...
