Hunting Spirit R Parts in Singapore

Don't know if this belongs in this section, but it should be interesting to the FD folks.

I was on my way back from three fun filled days and nights in a cesspool in Indonesia and had a day to spend in Singapore. My collegue was having a front mount intercooler installed at a tuning shop while we were out on assignment, so we grabbed a cab across town to pick up his car after we got to the Changi airport. I was really excited to see a tuning shop in a foreign country.

I am always on the look out for 13B parts. I have it in the back of my mind that if I can find a stash somewhere, I will ship 'em all back the states for a fraction of the cost. Just dreaming, perhaps, but it sounds like a great idea.

We get to this shop. It is in an industrial district underneath this huge building complex. There are rows of shops, and in every one, they are all kinds of street car projects. It was cool just to drive through there, kinda like being at a car show. We get to his shop where his car is, and he tells me to take a look around. Guys, there were piles of rotary parts just lying everywhere. Benches full of rotors, piles of twins on another shelf. I was starting to drewl.

In the back of the shop they were putting a 20B in a Gen 2, and in the next bay they were working on a new RX8. Next to it was a new JDM front clip from a Cosmo with 30K miles. He said they paid $9000 Sing dollars for it..I thought that was pretty steep, but hey, it was a 20B. I thought it was way cool to see so much iron in one place.

I asked them about finding some Spirit R parts, thinking that surely the stuff would be cheaper in Singapore. Wrong answer. He said there were only two Spirit R's in the country. It is likely that this is a dead end for the rims I want. I guess excellence comes with a high cost, huh?

Well, I didn't buy a stash of parts, but my buddy's car ran real nice. The car culture is alive and well in Singapore.

According to a friend of mine, there are only 14 FD's in Singapore, and they're VERY expensive to get.

Well, that should be pretty accurate. This guy was referring to Spirit R's when he said only two.

The deal is that people are encouraged to grandfather their cars out of service. To renew the liscense is quite costly. Registration is for 10 years and on the order of $10,000 or more. Once the car is 10 years old, I think the cost goes up, but let someone who lives there answer that. 14 huh? I certainly didn't see any third gens there.

On the lighter note, we were able to find quite a few motors in Malaysia. I can get a 13BREW for around $1000. Problem is that we don't know the history or anything like that. Ususally low miles. But by the time we get it to the US, you are breaking even.

from what i know, singapore is a freaking expensive place to get a car, an old 94 mercedes cost around $300K singapore dollars and basically you also need to pay the freaking ERP when u enter the city during the peak period. those that can afford an imports like the silvia, rx7 and evos in singapore is really loaded.

they're buildin a new line (that makes 3 main lines total) for the MRT, pretty fast, pretty cheap

as for prices of cars in singapore, yes it f*cking expensive, the road tax on a old silver spur 2 rolls royce is 20k singapore dollars, thats 12-13k USD, and by the time your done paying for taxes on the car and the COE (Certificate of entitlement, which is limited each year and basically auctioned off by the singapore government), you could've paid an extra 1.5 times the cost of the car.... f*ck the PAP (oh noz they reading this! popos coming down now)

so far i've seen 2 FC's and 3 FD's (hell might even have seen the same FC or FD 2-3 times, so for all you know its the same 2 cars)

I don't think they were sold there new, so they're all imported. Don't know for sure though. But it sounds a lot like Egypt a few years back... where they had Customs/Import tax on cars that was 300% of their value. So the price of the car itself was the cheapest part of the deal I'd imagine it's a similar case in Singapore...

PS: My friend bought a '93 for that amount. We should count our blessings, huh?

That's exactly what I was thinking. I'd rather have parts be expensive than have to pay a rediculous amount on taxes and a countries various other fees.

lol...well that's singapore for you guys, the government was staying something like trying to reduce the pollution and encourage people to take the mass rapid transit and discourage people owning cars, that's why they set a freaking high COE which i think is all some BS, that's one of the government scheme to make more money. Beside, all the best businesses in singapore is owned by the government so economic growth wise for the individual businesses is 30%, that's why most of the singaporean ran to neighboring country such as indonesia to make money.

The going rate is about 6,000-9,000 RM , but most part shops there would rather export to US or Australia as they can fetch a better price there .

You can hit up the link. Some of the guys there might be able to hook you up.

Those were the good old days. today, you'll be lucky to spot a decent unit and the going prices have increased tremendously. You're looking at approximately 12,000 for a front clip.
