A HUD in an FD

Pretty much stated/ For those who don't kknow, a HUD is a Heads Up Display and it allows for you to keep your eye on the road without having to glance down to check the gauges (or across to your left or the passenger side for all you heavily modded gauge peeps out there ). The stock 2002 Z06 had a factory option to include this and I know that jimlab's car has it. Just wondering if this can be bought separate and installed into an FD with no problems. Any companys out there make a standalone?

My boost guage has a HUD. It's a Defi boost guage/turbo timer. It didn't seem to be very accurate so I disconnected it when I needed some extra vaccuum hoses. I think I'll reposition the boost sensor and see if it works better.

My experience was it was accurate when I had it installed on my turbo prelude connected to a nipple on the intake manifold, so I believe them to be good.

Jimlab never came close to finishing his rx7, much less put a HUD in it.

they sell generic hud kits on ebay and defi makes a kit but they are pretty lackluster. i researched it for a few months before i just settled on the amemiya column gauge pod.

We had put one into an FD many years before I joined this forum. It was in a Targa competition car, and took the rpm signal from the coils and also showed boost if I remember right (this was 2005). It was a standalone HUD unit.

We did not like it because it required a small 4"x 4" piece of smoked transparent film (like a square of tint film) to be applied to the inside of the windshield glass, so that the HUD could be read clearly in daylight. Having this piece of smoked tint directly in your vision in front of you, was a pain so we ripped the whole piece of junk out. I think it retailed for about $400.00 too.
That was back before HUDs were as commonplace as they are now. I doubt the new ones on the market need the translucent film stuck to the glass.

What irks me is the cost, and also having a little lumpy plastic box on my dashboard that looks out of place. If the look of the unit could be blended in better, I'd probably look at the idea again.

Theres an app called speedview you can download for free that has a HUD option.

You could buy an old android phone, turn the gps on, and hardwire it into the car.
It also record speed, can do 0-60 times, 1/4 etc which you can export.

Nope, but my Z06 had HUD. Does that count?

I did research adding HUD to the car, but there wasn't enough room beneath the gauge cluster hood for the Corvette module and it's driven by the PCM, not stand-alone. Not a problem if you're converting to the LSx platform, but useless for rotary owners.
