i'm looking to by a '94 FD. it looks to be an R1 model. i'm am guessing as it has the small body kit pieces behind the front and rear wheels, the R1 wing (i believe), and the front lip. these parts may have been added. is there any way to tell for sure? by VIN # maybe??

look in both oil cooler ducts, there should be two coolers. no sunroof, suede seats, kidney pinching ride quality.
a 94 is an r2.

try the 'search' feature next time.

The R1 was only produced in 93, 94 and 95 models are called R2.

The oil cooler ducts are in the front bumper, on both the left and right sides of the main (radiator and IC) intake. R1 and R2 models have 2 oil coolers, one in each side, and all other models had only one, on the right side (when looking at car from front).

It's an ok deal for $15k, assuming everything is functioning correctly. You should take it to a rotary mechanice, or even a Mazda dealership and have them do a compression test to assure that the motor is working well.

If you take it to Mazda, they should be able to slap a boost gauge on it to assure that the turbos are working properly too. You can do this yourself too if you want.

Here's a lot of good info to get you started.

If you have an automatic, the second one is a tranny cooler, not an oil cooler.

this car is not an auto, so i'm good. i will check for the oil coolers tomorrow.
i also have every intention of taking it our local Mazda specialist.. or at LEAST the dealership for a compression check.
the car has boost and oil temp gauge, so i will check for the 10/8/10.
my one concern: i noticed a homemade boost controller (ala the JoeP MBC). so who knows how hard the car has been run.

*edit. stupid typos!

Make sure the two oil coolers look alike. The one on the driver's side is the one all models have. If an R1/R2, the one on the pax side will look the same. There are aftermarket kits to add the second oil cooler, but they do look substantially different.

Also, the '93 R1 did not have cruise control. How about the R2 models?

I will e-mail you from work tomorrow. When are you going to test drive it?

DON'T buy it before you hear from me.

i'm not buying it 'till i check it out THOROUGHLY (meaning taking it to the Mazda place here in town), run a carfax, etc. i'll be looking for your email.
i will be test driving it tomorrow and possibly taking it to a mechanic.... but if i buy, it won't be until later in the week. i'm going to be VERY careful with this. it will be my daily driver and i won't buy a car that has been abused within an inch of it's life.. no matter HOW badly i want it

Not to get back on the two oil coolers and tranny cooler I saw another FD at the NW meet that was a 5 spd touring that has two oil coolers. I checked becuse I thought it was strange that mine had two (but one being a tranny cooler makes since). But then again mine came off the line 5-92 so it was one of the first made. I have noticed mine has the rear windshild squirter and the hole in the deck led for the wiper but no wiper or wiper motor. I dont belive the R1-R2 came with the rear wiper but I am not for sure, I thought the R1-R2 had all the little things removed for weight reduction such as no AC no stereo no sun roof no rear wiper. It seems that thoughout the three years they kind of added and removed some things. If I am not mistaking I dont thik the R1-R2 came with leather.

It's not an oil cooler, its a tranny cooler because you have an automatic.

There are many people that have added the second oil cooler to their base/touring/pep/peg models. Most people just find a wrecked R1/R2 and get the second cooler and the lines. It's that simple. Just like cruise control. All you need are the components for it from a touring or pep/peg and it plugs right into an R1/R2. However, R1/R2's did not come in automatics, period.

With these cars being 10 years old and 90% of them modified, it going to be hard to tell exactly which models were originally what as many people have added or removed what they wanted.

The only two options that really matter are the second oil cooler and the sun/moon roof.
