the vin numbers on the front housing on the engine, those should be the same as the last numbers/letters on your VIN # (if i remember correctly) if not...well then you have yourself a reman.

As far as I know motors don't have a VIN, they have a engine number. Go to Mazda with your VIN and ask for a warranty report. This warranty report will show your car's original engine number as well as any work done under warranty or recall.
jpandes has it pretty much correct. If the water pump housing (not water pump), water neck have been painted silver it is probably a reman. To be absolutely sure there is actually a aluminum tag glued to the motor. Unfortunately you can't see that tag with the motor installed and complete. It hides behind the pressure tank down by the PS and AC pumps.

if the motor was a mazda reman, it will have a sticker on the oil pan. i don't know how long the sticker would stay on but mine has 12k on the motor and it's still there.

Jeff is correct, the engine number on the front cover does not match the VIN number. You need to contact the dealer with your VIN and they can give you the original engine number. Unfortunately, you have to remove the alternator to see the number.

Nice one fdeeznuts! My buddy got a front clip from japan that had 60k miles on it originally I think and had clearly been rebuilt, it had silicone sealing everywhere, the rotor housings, oil pan, everything...
