Question How Smooth Should Shifts be?

I recently changed to RedLine MT-90. Shifting still seems a little notchy (mainly 1st - 2nd and gets better when temp rises), could it be there isn't enough fluid? I followed Rob's "How To" and filled it till it spilt out of the fill hole. And I have about 1/2 quart left, which leads me to believe I put in the required 2.6 quarts. Any opinions?

I have the exact same condition. I have been driving it like that for... about 8 months, and the tranny is fine. But it is notchy and when it is cold you really have to pull on it to make it go into second

what i also noticed for me was that shifting at 4k + rpm was a lot smoother than shifting at 3k 1st to 2nd.

I will give that a try, do you shift all other gears around 3k? (normal driving of course)

Nothing is wrong, just the quirks of an FD. I switched to Mobil 1 synthetic and you did do it correctly(till it comes out of the fill hole). the synthetic helped a lot and keeps grinding to a minimum and makes it a lot smoother, I could really tell. While you were down there you might as well have changed your differantial fluid. Most people forget about changing this but you have to to kepp things in working order. Just bring a gas mask when you do, it's gonna stink to high heavn.

for the other years yea I tend to shift at higher rpms, but except for the 1st to 2nd all my other shifts are fine. that's why i don't drag race

if u guys have hard time shifting either slow down or speed up the time between shifts and make sure u PRESS the clutch all the way this makes a big diffrence on how u shift.

yup, that's what i noticed too...when i shifted 1st to 2nd at 3k normal it would be notchy, if i was really slow it would be better, or if i shifted faster at 4k it would be good to - for normal driving.

No matter what I do or how I shift when I first get into my car is notchy from 1-2nd. Even after letting it warm up. I have even tried to hold the clutch down roll for a second and put it into gear. Didnt work.

After 10min it goes away. My car has 15,000 original miles so it must be normal

You are driving a sports car guys, it isn't gonna shift like your honda. I would be disappointed if the shift in any sports car I drove wasn't firm. Get yourself a short shifter and you'll then know knotchy AND firm...but you won't be missing 3rd anymore...

I just put a torque brace in my car. I still feel some of the notches when its cold, but it does feel like there's been some pressure relief on the gearbox. I've got a B&M on the way too. My main shifting problems or complaints have been getting it into the 1st gear corner and downshifting from 5-4. 1st shifts always seem to need a lot more force to push it into the socket than the other gears. 5-4 is a pain getting around the reverse block synchro. Real pissy on heel toeing it and having to move the stick more than one direction inbetween clutching. Can't wait until the short shift's in though. Torque brace did make its part of the difference.
