How to properly break in new motor?
How to properly break in new motor?
Just got my motor rebuilt, what are your opinions on breaking it in? My mechanic told me to drive it 1000 miles, preferably stop and go traffic to break in every gear. First 500 miles try not to boost and after 500 miles give it a little boost. Does anyone else have an opinion on how to do this or how to put more miles on my car?

Ask BATMAN, he knows all the highschool parking lots in the bay area and racks up a lot of mileage doing that. Oh yeah and also remember to use redline synthetic because you don't have to change your oil for 10,000 miles

exactly what mazda told me when i put my reman in. definatly dont boost under 500, i went to 600 and didnt floor it till 1200...just to be super safe bc it was a big investment. that engine ended up being bulletproof though.
damn, what torture ... I can barely go 5 miles w/out boosting...
Everday I leave the house to drive across town and say...lets see if I can do this without boosting...ummm...nope I've never done it...hehehe
BTW: Those breakin rules sound about right...

i change the oil every 1000 miles anyways, I'm super **** about changing oil.
Nocab, I know what you mean, it's even worse when you haven't tried out your single turbo yet believe me.

I would do the oil/filter @ 500 miles as well. Oh, and I WOULD NOT use syn oil on a new motor as regular oil does a better job of breaking in the seals, metal parts, etc... There was a thread on this just the other day, but I can't find it right now.
After the breakin I would then switch to syn if you choose to run it.

I'm trying to break mine in and it sure is hard staying off the boost! I'm going crazy!
900 miles to go....
I'm using (at the recomendation of my engine builder) Valvoline racing 20w50 dino oil to break it in, changing the oil and filter at 500 miles.

i got a rebuild at pettit. changing after 500 is very smart. but as far as the boost is concerned, i was told not to worry, just do not drive under WOT. the boost was looped over and was limited to 7psi. that way i could pull some boost, but not too much. cameron told me that the 5-7 psi that i would see would help in the break in, just do not over do it. i have seen no problems and am working on mile 5K in only 2 months on the rebuild.......i do not think that he would steer me the wrong way, not even for *sales sake*
Get the biggest vynil sticker you can find. It should say something like this.
" If I wasn't braking-in my new engine I'd kick your ***, so don't rev at me bitch"
Don't get tempted to race, that's just a good way to stay on the right path to motor brake-in.

I'm going to third this replacing the oil after the first 500. I actually would replace it initially, too, after just a very few miles. As has been said, the mileage procedure that you were told sounds about right.
