How to obtain a Rebuilt title

I just need some help or to be pointed to the right direction.

I'm purchasing an FD from a guy I work with. It was actually his daughters car that she purchased with a salvage title some years ago. The daughter put a bunch of money into it but could not finish it due to some health/personal problems. The father is now selling the car but cant find the salvage title that was given to his daughter. What are my choices?

I know the car is in good shape, not stolen. He is an honest old man just looking to sell the car instead of it sitting.

Specs:
93 Rx7 Touring
28,000 miles
Silver with black leather

I just need to know where to start!

It sounds like you are asking two questions- how to deal with a missing title, and how to convert a salvage title to a rebuilt title. The answers are very state-specific - search your MA DMV web site for info: http://www.mass.gov/rmv/regs/index.htm

Typically, as far as a missing/lost title goes, the owner just applies for a replacement copy of the title.

I won't speculate on the issue of converting a salvage title to a rebuilt title.

Well.... Actually the car was purchased with a salvage title, the new user put the car in the body shop to get fixed but never registered the car and now the title that was given to them is lost. So am I gonna have to try to track down the original owner of the car back in 96 for him to request another title?

Im going through this right now, and my brother already did this one. You need to show receipts for EVERYTHING you bought (prove it wasnt stolen), and probably have someone look over the car.

The current owner can request a replacement title. (There should be a specific DMV form for your state - it is a pretty common request as people misplace their titles frequently.)

As for changing a salvage into a rebuilt, this is very state specific. And why would you want to do this?

hey, let me know if you have any luck figuring this out. I got my car from a guy in california and I'm in Pa. I got a california salvage certificate with the car but I still have to get it retitled. as I understand it, in Pa you can only get a salvage or rebuilt title. You get the rebuilt title by taking a special inspection of the car at like the state police or something. I have been told in NY they can get a clean title back but who knows.

My problem is that the current owner has died which is the daughter of the man I'm buying it from.... She never registered the car. So who needs to request the title. CarFax shows the car was purchased at a auction in Maryland and issued a salvage title. Do I need to have the original owner that crashed it request a new one or the auction?

I live in MA right now but my mom lives in Newport RI, which RI is one of the states that has the law of if a vehicle is over 10 years old you dont need a title, just the old registration and proof of RI residency accompanied my a local police VIN check. I can easily use my moms address but I dont have the old registration and dont really want to go this route.
