How much should a used engine sell for?
Im in a debate with myself weather to have my current engine rebuilt by BNR Supercars or buy a used engine from a 94tt and then have that one rebuilt and trade in my old engine wiht could be used as a core.
The engine from the 94 has perfect compression (115psi on all) and has 45k on it. If I purchased it I would have 2mm hurley seals, coolant seal sealed, race port, and race bearings.
Here is the thing though.. Which would be cheaper? If I had my current engine rebuilt it would run me 3k with everything (new seals, springs, coolant seal sealed, race bearings, race ported, rotor housings...etc etc). This used engine though is going for 2k. Is that a good price or not? Im not sure if getting another engine would be worth the hassle to have it rebuilt and trade in my current to him to act as a core. D'OH!
I will only have my engine rebuilt by BNR Supercars. Bryan has helped me so much and has answered all my questions. Cool guy

Get Brian to rebuild yours. The reason is eventhough that used motor has good compression its life is 60% gone. If there is only a $1K difference go with a rebuild which is basically a new engine. Apex seals get brittle with use and in another 15K - 20K that used engine is going to have very brittle seals that are just ready to pop any at any time. Then you would be going thru this all over again.

Well if it comes with a good transmission with no 5th gear syncro probs I might would do that. In that case what I would prob do is this.......use the 45K mile trans you just bought and sell your trans for $500. Take your motor apart and part it out as long as most everything is good. The rotors are worth $300-$400 by themselves if they are in good shape, in addition you have front cover, side housings, intermediate housing, e-shaft, ect, ect, ect. You could prob make $800 easy parting out the old motor as long as alot of stuff isnt destroyed.
So here we are, we spent $2000 and got back $1300. That means we have a trans with 45K and a running motor with good compression thats going to need a rebuild in the next year or two depending on how much boost you run and how many miles you put on it.......BUT we've only spent $700. I'd just drop it in and drive it.....BUT save the other $2300. Invest it and by the time your used motor is blown you should have enough to buy a good race engine.
If your paying for labor and dont know what your doing with a 3rd gen just do it right from the start. The labor is too expensive and if you have to pay it just get a good rebuild from Brian. I might would swap it for you if you want to go non seq so I dont have to put all that **** back in......I'd have to think about what to charge though. I'm sure the dealership's going to give you a nice big whole in your ***.
