Question how much should new plugs, wires, belts, and a new fuel filter cost?

I was quoted around $500.00 for parts and labor at a local shop in san diego? Does this sound like way too much? Let me know...

thanks...

HELL NO!
Plugs= $5 a non-platinum NGK plug(leading and trailing)
Wires= $30 depends on which ones you buy(I wouldnt replace them if they are not damaged unless you like to throw money away)
Belts= $60 for both I belive or around there
Fuel Filter= $32

Thats $127 if my 3rd grade math is correct.
Leaving $373 for labor. Thats an eye poke IMO.
300 bucks would be a good price for that.

You should try to do everything except the fuel filter if your an average wrencher.

That's about right

It's about $400-$500 depending on part prices and labor rate. Labor for fuel filter is about 2 hours and for the spark plugs as well, but the wire labor should be free since you pay for the plug labor or visa versa. So labor is probably $350 and parts are aproximately $150 (I am guesstimating but should be real close).

You are better off getting a better brand wire for the money. Taylor Pro's $35 from Summit Racing or Jacobs from rx7.com for $40.

You should be able to do all the labor yourself on these basic maintenance items, and save yourself the $350 to use for mods.

Just curious, can you get to the coils from underneath the car without removing the elbow, throttle body and UIM to change the spark plug wires?

I know you can change the plugs easy, but I changed my wires while I had everything off so the coils were right there, no big deal.

If you can't get to them from the bottom without removing that stuff, the labor will be quite a bit...

$350 should get your Parts and Labor on changing all fluids, plugs, filters on the car. Belts are about another $100 P&L.

How difficult is it to change the sparkplug wires? I had a mechanic tell me the intake manifold has to come off. Is this true?

It is very difficult to change the spark plug wires because many other components are in the way. Removing the UIM is a great help in getting better access to the spark plug wires.

Yes, I was unable to get one of the leading wires off without removing the coil bolts so I could lift it a little. So I don't see how you can get to them without removing the UIM, but I don't know a hell of a lot about cars so who knows.

I did the plugs going through the top, since I dont have skinny bitch arms and hate being on my back under a car. I didnt think it was that hard at all. I removed the intake elbow, throttle body, and oil filler neck. If I wanted to I could change the wires with these parts off but the wires werent damaged so I didnt. I think you can change the wires with out taking the TB for sure but the intake elbow has to come off.

P.S. Lift weights for 1 month before you do the plug change. I had to use a cheater bar for one of the leading plugs. All is fine nothing was broken.

Everything can be accessed from underneath, and it makes it much, much easier. Just buy some jack stands and you'll be able to work on your car forver.

Plugs = $40 (the platinums last longer)
Wires = $40 (the Taylors are better than stock)
Fuel Filter = $40 (more at a dealer)
Belts = $75 (actual Mazda belts are NOT cheap)

thats roughly $195 in parts and $305 in labor? Average shop rate is $60-$75 an hour. So the price is not bad. I would just order the parts from www.mazdaformance.com and do the labor myself. I'd let someone else do the fuel filter, just because it's a major pain. I did mine the first time, and have no problem paying my mechanic $35 to change it.

To change the wires, I'd go from the top, it's easier to remove the elbow, throttle body, and oil filler neck. Then everything is right there. For future reference the plugs are easier from the bottom. Good to see someone doing maintanence on their FD.

You should look at doing the labor yourself. Most of that is simple besides maybe the belts. Removing the fan is a B#@&*
