How much horspower and boost can the stock o.em. clutch and flywheel on the 3rd gen
I was wondering what the maximum horsepower the rx7's stock o.em. clutch and fly wheel can handle, i have only down pipe, knn drop in filter in stock box, and downpipe. So the horespower i have is around 290, please tell me how much horspower the stock clutch and flywheel on the third gen can handle.
Well, I had intake, dp, mp, cb, ecu@14psi. I'm estimating that I had close to 400hp by the trap speed I was getting in the quarter mile. The clutch slipped and doesn't grab quick enough. My guess is that the stock clutch is good for about 330-350hp.
I purchased my car back in 98, completely bone stock.
The clutch was dead when I got it. I wound up purchasing the Bonez street clutch assembly. I believe they stated that it was 15% more grip than the OEM unit. I kept the stock flywheel at the time.
Shortly thereafter, I add the DP/Cat back/Intake and ECU. The Bonez clutch began slipping almost immediately. It was basically my stupidity for not putting up more money for the "street-comp" unit (Which I think is an ACT knock-off anyway). The part that will fail is the pressure plate. The OEM clutch disk can support a lot more power than you would realize. As for the flywheel, the OEM unit could probably handle as much power as you could throw at it! (big heavy bastard!).
Anyways....The morale of the story is: If you plan on doing any type of upgrades in the future, just go ahead and get the "street-comp" or "heavy duty" clutch assembly (which ever manufacturer).
I now have the ACT Heavy Duty pressure plate with the stock clutch disk. I also added the 8.5lb flywheel. I put down about 300rwhp and this setup definitely rocks!
Good Luck
