How are mazda remans holding up?

I need a new motor and my mechanic wants to charge me like $7k for a full rebuild with new rotors/housings (which it probably needs). How are these motors holding up in general? I've heard some bad things on this forum about mazda remans.....

I also think I heard that malloy mazda is selling brand new OEM motors for $3400+core. Any truth to this?

It is not cost effective to piece together a motor from new parts. Buy a reman, and then if you want tear it down, inspect it, port it, check clearances, etc. There have been instances where a bad reman showed up but the majority of them are very good. Order it from Ray Crowe at Malloy Mazda. Most all of them come with new rotor housings.

Yeah me too, but it adds up when you pay premium prices at a shop for the individual parts to put together a completely new motor plus all the labor involved...

I don't have the mechanical know-how to do that....how much labor is involved in tearing it down for inspection if I have my mechanic do it? Is there any benefit from picking one up from malloy? My local dealership wants $2600+$1k core....seems reasonable to me. That way I wouldn't have to ship a core back to wherever malloy mazda is located...

I mean these mazda remans pretty much come from the same place, right?

Seams to be about the same price. I charge 450-600 to tear down and build a motor once it is out of the car depending on weather I port it or not and how aggressive of a port.

I have about 25K miles on my mazda reman. Everything is running very smoothly. The price on the motor sounds about right but the amount of labor seems high. Gotham Racing charges ~1400 for motor swap (take old out, rebuild and install new/rebuilt). So that sounds like about a $2K difference. The main thing I would be concerned with is not very many mazda dealerships know how to properly remove/install the 13b. Lots of small mistakes have been noted on the installation process that may cause big problems later. Like for instance on my car the goober that did mine pinched a seal wrong from the motor to the turbo oil line causing a leak after a while. But I have also heard others with problems with service from the mazda dealerships. There are just not very many mazda mechanics that know very much about the FD....

I take it that it's worth getting done? I'll talk to my mechanic when the time comes...

I didn't mention anything about labor costs in specific. My mechanic wants about $7k total to pull and rebuild my motor with all new parts. No dealership is going to touch my car, there are a couple rotary specialty shops around here.

If you get a reman, I would definitely pay to have it torn down and "rebuilt".

$7k for an R&R and pretty much all new engine is a pretty good deal, actually.

7k is high. JPRIMPORTS.COM,
7k can get you a nicely ported motor, not just a regular installed reman.

Keep in mind, you'll probably end up getting s/s oil metering lines, poly motor mounts, upgraded clutch, new fpr, new coolant hoses, new engine wiring harness, ignition wiring harness etc etc. There are lots of things that are worth doing while you're in there (depending on mileage) that drives the price up a lot, so $7k is just the beginning.

keep in mind that Mazda has a 12 months/unlimited miles warranty on their engine. However, their warranty doesn't cover apex seals failure so you just need to make sure whoever that is installing your engine did the install properly or you'll be back in where you begin with. So before you go out and have someone tear down the mazda reman and/or installing the reman, you should ask your installer if they will honor their install/rebuild if apex seals failure occurs.

Note, this also includes mazda dealership installing your engine and they will not cover apex seals failure.

Go back and reread.....this guy is essentially getting an R&R with an engine made from new parts (ie, new engine), NOT a reman. That is a VERY fair price.
