I've installed absolutely everything on my mod list. Also, I removed, refinished, and reisntalled, the instrument cluster, A/C radio face plate, center console plate, and both door plates. I've even recoded both of the door lock cylinders.
Much thanks go to the RX7Store and Zavier, where I actually work part-time for the love of it, who have shown me alot of what I know about the FD. I did do all of the work on my old 88 vert and 89 TII before hooking up with the store.

Constant threat
I work on all my cars as much as I can. Some things I let the dealers do, though I haven't had to have the FD worked on by anyone other than myself.
It is a personal pride thing, if nothing else.

All work but bodywork and painting. I did have my core rebuilt though because I could not do the machining of the rotors for 3mm seals. Next time I will do it, a rebuild is in my opionion easier than a piston engine with all the f'ing valves and associated hardware. Just the part farting around with valve clearences is a pita! And the satisfaction is amazing! Its also nice to have a lift in your garage! HeeHee.

never rebuilt a tranny(but I've rebuilt 3 engine's in the last year). Done everything else except paint and mount tires to wheels. Also did the tuning...that was fun to learn.

I did the non-sensitive stuff, like the downpipe and FMIC.. but I do my own injectors or fuel rail. I would rather a shop screw that up and eat the cost then paying for a motor out of my own pocket.

It seems like a lot of you do all of your own work. How did you learn? Did any of you receve training? Do you use service manuals, the forum, or just wing it? I would love to work on my own car, especially since I am about to spend 8k, on a rebuild etc, but I am scared to? How do I overcome my fear?

research, research, research... (and common sense)
If you break something... it can always be fixed!
what kind of mods do you plan on doing? just the rebuild?

You cant sit there and study a vaccume hose diagram and have any clue what is going on. But, when you get in there root around, things start making sense.
Just an example, but my understanding of how my car works goes up exponentially (sp?) when i dive in and take it apart.

The rebuild, is already being done. I just wanted to see how people learned because after spending 8k this time, I don't want to have to spend that kind of $$$ again.
It sounds like I should just start reading more and messing around under the hood more. I have definately been spending more time on the forum, and it gives me hope that in the future I can do more of the work on my own.
Anyone know a good place to pick up a service manual?

It also helps to have some basic automotive knowledge. If you have that and can read a shop manuel, you'll be fine. I attemted to rebuild my first rotary when I was 19 way back in 1995. It was a crappy rebuild but it ran. To this day I still do everything myself. However, if the check engine light comes on, I will take it to the dealer and have them diagnose the problem. Then I will fix the problem myself.
