how long do 3rd gen motors last!?

i currently own a 85rx that is in great shape and i am seriously considering buying a 3rd gen- but what confuses me is that almost half the ads i have seen for them the car claims to have a new motor, so are these engines not relialble, or are they inexpensive to replace, or what? would appreciate any replies and let me know if there are any good deals out there, thanks

You'll pay $4,000-$4,500 to replace the engine and $3,500 to replace the turbos (including labor). At least that's what I was told when I called around to get quotes for a friend.

Speaking of reliability, my car has 111,000+ miles on the original engine and turbos. I've been through my share of difficulties with them, but they've held together great and I get great output from them both.

I love my FD, but it isn't a daily driver. It's a project car, a lot of folks who depend on these cars as daily drivers have been let down. Those are the stories you hear and that's why a lot of people sell the cars after being left stranded by them.

A lot of the cars you will see advertised as having new engines probably had the engine replaced by someone who mis-diagnosed a vacuum problem. Get to know the hoses in this car and you will save yourself thousands of dollars...

is there a FAQ or something that we can differ this type
of post to?!?

I mean, isnt anyone else getting tired of all these folks
who went and saw the fast and the furious, and now
are like "what? rotary engines dont last? I should go post on the
rx7 message board!"

I'm not getting the least bit tired of people posting questions about the RX-7 in the RX-7 forum, as odd as that may seem.

This forum, like the internet is about nothing more than the free exchange of information. I'm glad that someone who went and saw "The Fast and The Furious" would come here and ask questions before they got into something they couldn't handle. I wish I had had the same luxury when looking for my car. Unfortunately, I got into something that had a lot of issues. Fortunately, I had a daily driver to supplement my project car and it wasn't that big of a deal. Not every would have *that* luxury.

If this forum makes people more knowledgable about our beloved RX-7's, it's serving it's purpose. No reason to send their questions elsewhere where they may not get the attention of someone who knows their stuff.
