i would like to buy a used pettit ecu on the internet from someone but i would like to know if there is a way to know if it is really a pettit ecu. is there anything to check on it? I don't want to get ripped off by buying a stock one.

I can't find a pic of Pettit's ECU, but here's one of the M2:



They should put a sticker on it after their down tuning it like the one in the pic above. If it doesn't have a sticker you can tell by looking inside. You should see an extra PC board sandwiched in between the other 2 that has a connector going into the pins where the main CPU chip is. Hope this helps.
