How to ID what series engine

I just picked up a engine from a 2000 rx7. this would make it a series 8 engine but before I am 100% positive what are some ways of determining this?

I believe the differences between the different series 13B-REW (FD) engines came from their different ancillary items, like ECU, turbos, crossover pipe, etc., etc.

If you're just selling a keg than it's all the same

that is right, there are a couple of updates to the keg, but any proper rebuilt engine would have the same ones. basically the only difference 11/98 and up is a revised metering orifice in the rotor housing. i believe the older housings have a flat head looking thing, and the 99+ housings don't.

the thing is that every rotor housing made after 11/98 has this done.

the big update was the electrics, harness etc. and don't forget there were two variations, the 280ps and the 265ps version.
