How hot does your fd run........

We all know heat is a big factor as to how long our cars last. So i was wondeing what kind of temps (coolant, oil) people see, and what cooling mods they have to help with this problem.

operating temp should be around 221 F. sometimes lower. upgrade the radiator, seal around it, aftermarket temp gauge. better intercooler. there are many threads on this to get some testimonials. this is what I have experienced. hope it helps.

When my car IS running, it's not now, I usually see 85-86 C on the PFC. I have a Koyo Radiator, Evans NPG+ Coolant and my fans are set to turn on at 86 C(Datalogit).

~190F on the freeway, and with the A/C on @ 1+. ~200F in the city in smooth traffic, and up to 220F in stop-and-go traffic, however, I always turn the A/C on when it gets to 210F (during the latter).

Common cooling mods are a manual fan switch and Miata Thermoswitch.

84C is my regular temp, up to 90C when boosting. This is with a huge custom rad, FMIC, and scoot hood.

Morning - 83ºC - 85ºC
Afternoon - 85ºC - 91ºC
Night time and early morning doing you know what =) - 84ºC - 88ºC

These are the usual conditions, though recently I have been hitting 93ºC during the afternoon in stop and go traffic. I found green gunky crap on my overflow stick. A flush and clean is in progress right now.

my coolant temps are 180 normally driving around, 200-210 when boosting/going up hill after a 2-3 mile up hill at a 30-35 degree angle. coolant temps come back down to 180 with in a block after turning around and going down hill though.

ambiant temp is alwyas 75-80 degrees here in Hawaii

mods i have are air ducts (to force more air thru radiator) as well as the fan mod where I can control all 3 speeds of the fans. i usually have it on low which driving around town and turn it on high when cooling down after a hard run. Im also running about a 20% water to coolant ratio with just green coolant and no waterwetter. (im my experience, with 3 cars, waterwetter doesn't do jack!) i do have a SMIC as well as the stock radiator.

as far as "operating temp should be around 221 F." I believe this is totally wrong! sure the fans do automatically turn on at ~221F but personnaly i like to keep it at 180. i would suggest you try to keep your water temps below 210F when just driving around town. unless your racing, your temps should really not go above 210F.

Yep, like everyone else, 80's or mid 90's max in summper. Mods allow better air flow and control of fans but still on stock radiator.

for me i actually did some experimenting with the cooling system....
when the car was completely stock (streetported motor but stock coolant system) i was getting like 85-93 without the Ac on... then sometimes heading uphill, i would get 95-97...

then i got a blitz 4 Row FMIC and a KOYO radiator. at that time, i didnt have the undertray on so all the air was hitting the ground and not the radiator. i was getting from 83-90 on freeway and 87 - 95 on the streets...

then, with the undertray on the car and setting the low speed fans to come on at 85 and high speed at 90, my temps never pass 87!! even in stop and go traffic, it will turn the fans on at 85 and climb to 87 and start heading down!!

The single thing that I have done to the FD to alleviate temps on the road course (never had problems on the street) is completely removing my A/C.

As has already been posted, the stock plastice end tanks weaken and burst over time. The aluminum ones......don't. Also, they have a greater capacity than the thin stock rad. Mazda went overboard with the weight savings when it you look at the intercooler and rad, in my opinion.
