how the heck to you remove the ECU?

I removed the kick panel, undid the 3 bolts holding the ECU, but the effing thing won't budge... the bottom swings out, but the top is stuck in place. it looks like there's some wires taped to it?

I've got a '94. is there something special I'm supposed to do? Rob Robinette's site says to just slide it out after you remove the bolts (well, keeping the top one in place, just loosening it - I removed mine all together).

thanks

You did pull the wires that were connected on the side of it right? I know mine wouln't budge unless I pull the wires before trying to move the ecu at all because the wiring harness is so short. I have a '93 though.

i found it pretty easy to remove the ecu with the mounting brackets. it's been a while but i remember it wasn't very hard, should just come right out. the only thing attached to it should be the harness in the back which is a little bit tricky to pull out since there's not much room back there.

that's what I'm doing - removing the ECU & brackets.

black99, I removed the two grounding wires (on the back) but that's it.... I haven't removed anything else - are you talking about those ground wires or soemthing else?

I was refering to the wiring harnesses in the back which you really can't get to, and you really can't see. The same wiring harness potatobbq was refering too. It's been a long time since I removed mine too, but I believe I couldn't move mine a whole lot or at all without removing at least a couple of the plugs that plug in to the ecu. The plugs are kind of a pain in the *** to get to because you can't see them and the only thing you can do is feel them. I think there's 4 seperate connectors that plug into the ecu off of the wiring harness.

BrianK,

I had the same problem. I found that mine actually had an extra bolt/screw (I can't remember which one it was) from the normal 3 bolts that every place mentions.

Look up there, you might have the same thing. Also, I didn't re-add that last bolt/screw when I put my Pettit ECU in....

ok, I drove my butt to hollywood to borrow a camera, that turned out to have no batteries... anyway, after much running around, here's some pics:

Here's a pic of the M2 still outside of the car. The yellow arrows - are these screws (they have threds, see next picture)?

another view - see the threads...

here's the stock one still in the car - the left arrow, that appears to be hooked into the left hand red whole from the frist pic. The right arrow points to what looks like a plastic screw that goes into the right hand red arrow in the first pic.

another view of the plastic screw thing from the last pic:

soo uhhh... yeah, what's the deal? does it slide out backward, forward, straight out, or am I missing a screw or something? Thanks

Yep, it's that damn extra screw that I had. Get that plastic screw out and the ECU should come right out.

Again, I didn't put that screw back when I installed my Pettit ECU.

yep... that was it.. it's not even a screw, it's a little plastic clip with threads. Crappy thing is that the threads, themselves, stripped when I was unscrewing it, so I had to pull the thing out.. what a pain... and getting the wiring harness unhooked - even more of a pain. oh well, it's done, thanks guys.
