How hard is it to change motor mounts?

My dealer want close to $700 to do one and that seems a bit much. Is this some kind of tough job?

You need to hoist/raise the engine to do it (or drop the subframe). If you have the means to do that, it's not bad.

It's super easy, just use a floor jack on the tranny to lift it up. Make some urethane ones yourself for like $50.00

As Mahjik stated, it's really not that bad. The subframe could be dropped, but in order to do that, you still need to be able to support the engine. You can lift the engine using a standard engine hoist or by a jack placed under the tranny. The mounts just unbolt and slide out. The hardest part is sealing everything back together so it doesn't leak (motor mount bolts go through the oil pan).

It should really only take you a couple of hours to do it. A good deal of the expense that the dealership quoted you is probably the part itself. The lowest price I've ever found stock motor mounts is through Ray Crow (Malloy Mazda) at about $250 each. Search for "polyurethane motor mounts" if you want a how-to on replacing the stock mounts with urethane variants (much cheaper, but slightly stiffer)

Not to mention you won't have to replace the mounts again.

I like the sound of "Super Easy" Glassman. I recall Peter Farrell doing two for me while I waited so I found the dealer charge a bit strange.

Maybe it is the cost of the Mazda mounts but we are talking about one mount and something like 5 or 6 hours of labor at the dealers.

I didn't have to drop the subframe to do mine. A good jack and a piece of wood under the tranny worked good for me.

Make sure you get all of the old sealant off of the motor mount bolts. I ended up burning the old stuff off with my oxy gas torch. It's very hard to remove with a wire wheel or fingernail.

From my experience, the Mazda dealer couldn't change a light bulb in 5 or 6 hours. Then, they would charge you for the bulb, an extra (insert small number) hundred.
