How good is the turbo blanket.

I was just wondering how good a turbo blanket is like the one from gotham racing. I have a single turbo fd that is daily driven. I was just thinking that since the turbo is oil cooled only and sits in Miami hot traffic should the blanked cause any damage to the turbo. Just thinking of all the heat contained on the exhaust side might just get too hot. Has anyone ever thought about it. And is it okay to buy a blanket if it does sit in hot traffic for more then 1/2 hour to an hour. Thanks.

Real, Damaging heat, isnt produced at slow speeds....the real heat is during WOT situations where the turbo will GLOW bright orange in some cases. The blanket will not hurt at slow speeds....but will contribute to over heat when at full swing....but on the same note....the components used to build any quality Tubocharger should be more than capable of withstanding extremely high temps......

I remember a few years ago when I was full-time at gotham, one of those blankets was on a supra.....the car made about 10 wide open pulls down a street, probably seeing redline at around 80 mph 10 times in a minute or so. When he pulled up to the shop and popped the hood, you could lay your hand on the blanket and keep it there. I think it's a great product.

I just received a "revised" blanket from Gotham...it has burlap sides (metal stitching looks better than the old verision too). I can touch it after heavy boosting, but no way am I going to lay my hand on it.

Without it...my face would burn looking in the engine bay; turbo side...

with a wrapped downpipe and the blanket...the engine bay is SIGNIFICANTLY...how do you say...less hot.

let me go take a quick pic...

Actually that's a misconception. Even though the most heat is generated then, the most heat seen by the center housing is seen minutes after the engine is turned off, when the oil stops running. The heat from the turbine side heat soaks into the CHRA and compressor side.

No, its a wrinkle black powder coat...here's an older picture

I wanted something clean and that would look some what stock to someone who isn't familar with FD's. Emission's guy in ATL, never asked a question, just said, "nice car."

on the heat tip...I wish I would have wrapped my manifold when the engine was out. The downpipe and exhaust are ceramic coated, but didn't satisfy me. I won't be removing the turbo anytime soon...If I did, I'd do something stupid like put a T4 - GT35R on

theres another member here that sells really nice turbo blankets on here. i wouldnt be suprised if he jumps in here after me with an ad. anyway im looking into getting one. how is the fitment on a r85 you think? dubulup what turbo do you have in there?

even more important to me to ask. in your first picture whats the green h joint going to? i cant even think what would be that far forward in the bay....?

how do you like your torque dampner? my one friend got one for his gsr and told me i should get one so i get less wheel hop... haha. then i had to tell him how my driveline was not in the front end.

R85, I don't know...that has a strange looking turbine housing; call gotham. My turbine is a 1.00A/R, nice and snug and could fit larger...the turbo itself is a T4-DUB-cstm

green h joint, I don't see what you are referring too

torque dampner...I have mixed feelings at the moment...with the short shifter, it jumps into 3rd gear at high rpms (with little effort), and it does bring vibrations into the cabin at the same rpms.

high rpm shifts, 2nd to 3rd...little effort from me, the shifter would "jump" right into third, instead of me over doing it and grinding 5th (not that I had issues before...just caught me by surprise how it just wanted 3rd gear)

the torque dampener causes the engine not to twist to the side...as much.

Another thing to note is that the turbo blanket on the turbine side can actually increase efficiency/performance of the turbo because less heat is lost to the air, and more thermal energy is transfered to the turbine wheel.

I want one for the stock twins, so who else sells them??

I have a turbo blanket too. It makes a huge difference. I wouldn't even consider running an aftermarket turbo without a blanket for the heat.

You don't have to buy them from Gotham either. They have been available over the net for some time.
pick a link.

The Larz wants a blanket for stock twins, too. I can roast marshmallows over the area over the turbos after some hard runs. Ok, not that bad, but still hot.

I'm gonna get in my DeLorean and gun it up to 88mph, go back to 2006 and make a twin turbo blanket.
