How do you take apart the alternator?

Well, i'm overbudget on my rebuild and my alternator doesn't need to be repaired. I was going to send it to Gothom for that but now I just want to paint it myself.

What is the trick to stop the pully from rotating to remove the nut? ...or how is it done?

An impact gun is the easiest way to remove that nut.

impact the nut...there are 4 screws/bolts on the front housing...then two or three BIG philips head screws on the electronics panel that need to be removed to get the stator/electronics out.

Once the stator rear bearings are out, the brushes will pop up. to get the rear bearing back in, you need to stick a small drill bit in the little "peep" hole in the back of the rear housing. The drill bit must pass over the brushes and hold them down. Make sure the bearing is seated ALL THE WAY before pulling the drill bit out.

have fun...pm me if you have questions, I just went thru this.
