I would wait till you're ready to go through maintaining an FD. I bought mine for 12000 then a year later my apex seals gave out that cost me another couple thousand for a motor, then two years after that my turbo seized. You got to really love this car to make the commitment.

While I was in highschool I started being a delivery boy for chinese food. I saved up and then bought my first car. A 2003 Mazda Protege5, paid it almost completely off and 2 years after I bought it (going into sophomore year in college). I was back home for summer and my brother stole the car one night and ran it off the road. Insurance helped pay for most of the FD while I covered the rest with what I had saved. I will agree with alot of the older guys. Being 1 year out from finishing school then heading off to Law School. It is very hard to afford and doing alot of work yourself and having friends that can help. No credit cards ever so no debt, financial aid for school. And then going back into my savings for fixing anything major. Knock on wood the engine lasts until I can really afford to pay for it. The biggest thing so far was the clutch going out. But in hind sight, they are quite a handful. But if you can afford it noone can tell you what to do with your money. Just drive it right and dont beat on it constantly, maintain the car and learn all you can. And after all that. I do not mod the car. I have to avoid the craving. The RX-7 was paid for completely in cash by the way.

Worked at a hardware store since i was 14, which got me enough to buy my honda prelude. Motor blew a few years later... After I turned 18 I received a few cd's worth about 30k... Used to invest in the stock market and got screwed on about 20 g's.

Either way with the money I've saved i bought a FD when i was a freshman in college, and I'm now pretty tight on cash with college n all. but loans really help a lot. waiting until tax season to claim up to 3,000 dollars on investment loses. fyi anybody can claim 3k a year for a few years if you have lost as much as I have in this terrible economy.
