Question How do I test my fuel gauge?

the fuel gauge is not working in my FD, how would i go about testing it.

ive already checked the connection going to the fuel pump but i havent had the pump out. so is there a way i can make the gauge move to see if the gauge works or how would i test the fuel level sender?

any help, especially pics, would be a huge help!
thanks

Level sensor works on ohms (resistance) i believe, but dont hold me to it. Check the FSM im sure that its in there.

I would pull the fuel pump out to make sure the float isnt binding on something.

ok, ill have to try and pull it out tomorrow, im not driving the thing this weekend anyway.

is there anything i should look out for? do i need a new gasket or can i just use some good silicon? (same type i used on my oil pan and everything else)

i have an impact driver (screwdriver thingy, unsure of actual name) and some PB blaster, that should be it right? as far as tools go

ill take some pics when im not too lazy to pull it out, until then advise or even pictures would be great

I think the PB blaster and a good screwdriver are the most important tools. The gasket can in many cases be reused; use your best judgment. Do not use silicone, you don't want that stuff in your fuel tank.

If the float assembly seems to be in good shape have a look at the wiper contact for the fuel level float. If those gunk up the resistance throws off the level sensing.

can anyone tell me what the resistance levels should be for a full tank and an empty tank?

I don't recall off the top of my head, but you can find it if you follow the links in the 3rd Gen FAQ to download the Factory Service Manual.

i checked the resistance between the sender and the grounding point on the fuel pump assembly and it was approx. 80 OHMs, so i got the idea to run a test wire between the connector going to the gauge and the single grounding wire, i think the resistance was 1 OHM and the gauge rose all the way to full (a little past that).

the last time i tried to test it i tried grounding the gauge wire to the chassis and thats why i couldnt get it to work.
if i can get ahold of my camera ill start taking pics. next step is to relieve fuel pressure and remove my fuel pump

Have you actually checked the float yet per dgeesaman? i.e. checked to make sure the float is still attached to the sender?

I FIXED ITTTTT!!!

i pulled out my fuel pump, which was very easy by the way, aside from the hard *** fuel lines. when i pulled the whole thing out the float wasnt attached so i reached in and grabbed it, it wasnt broke or anything just came off.

so here is i think how...
this big *** peice of metal was knocking around in my tank, not attached to anything.

im pretty sure it was the baffel but since it is FUBARed i just pulled it out. i think the gas must have sloshed from one side to the other with enough force to break it off my mounts. and it probably hit the float and knocked it off.
here is where the baffel broke off

so i reassembled it and it works great, i think it reads a little low but i dont want to pull it out again to fix it.

my gasket was pretty damn old but it looked brand new. and one thing i was surprised by is the condition of the tank. it is, by far, the cleanest gas tank i have seen on a car. not bad for being 17 years old.

Ah, yes I had the same thing caused by damaged baffles.
