How Do I Remove The Rear Cat Back Exhaust Hangers???

Hi,

Sorry to bring up such a simple subject but I'm a bit lost on this one!

Spent the last two days removing all the exhaust system, no problems.

But I'm having real problems trying to get the cat back part of the exhaust to slide out of the rubber hangers!!! arrrrggghh!!

They are a slightly different design to the others, I'm thinking of just cutting the things and getting some new ones,

But if anyone has any tips on the best way to remove the back of the exhaust, I would be gratefull! lol

By the way I have tried the WD40 trick on the rubbers, but no luck....

2 days?? you putting turbo back on cause with that kinda time it would make sense...if so, im surprised you didnt have problems putting the dp on?

anyways...you just need to wiggle the **** out of them! theres no easy way of getting them off...and you will most likely finish with bloody hands(i know i did). wd40 def does help; also a set of large plyers that way you can grip and twist.

I've also stuck the round shaft of an old screwdriver into the rubber hanger hole and stretched it while doing the pulling.

Thanks 4CN A1R I knew someone would say that.....lol

Been doing the job after work and I'm changing the Radiator and Intercooler as well as some other jobs, so I'm just taking my time and making sure I don't damage anything I shouldn't.

The downpipe is all done, thankfully no problems there. I have taken some pictures while I did the job if people are interested?

Well, back with the WD40 and screwdriver I think.........

Thanks.

I spray them with WD-40 and use a screwdriver to get it to flow into the rubbers.
Simple applicatiom of basic science. The rubber does not deteriote.

flathead or small prybar, a little wd40 or penetrating oil might help. putting on my exhaust was fine but last year when i pulled my diff mount out i had a way hard time with them.

my downpipe, that just made me cry. after the first time you get good at it though.

I feel your pain "7syawedis" haha.

After doing the downpipe, I felt as if I should have been given a t-shirt or something......"I changed my downpipe and lived!"

Anyway jobs done now, thanks for the advice people.

WD-40 or similar lubricant works wonders. I do them by hand but if you are not strong enough you could pick up an exhaust hanger removal tool at NAPA.

well, i do have most of the stuff out of the way...i can see my downpipe just by removing the upper intake pipe.

still, even with the full stock setup, i dont see how the whole thing could take more than 2 or 3 hours TOPS...not 2 days...

Grease the end of the metal hanger as best you can. Then take a channel lock pliers, and put one end on the end of the metal hanger. Put the other end on the opposite side of the rubber bushing. Squeeze the pliers so that they press the metal **** into the rubber bushing. Once the **** is pressed part way in, it will come off fairly easily.

A downpipe can easily take over a day the first time, particularly if there are issues with the studs. Getting a badly designed downpipe back on can take quite a while too.

If I had to pull my downpipe again I'm sure it would take less than two hours - but that is because I put anti-sieze on everything and the bolts are torqued to FSM specs, not corroded and at 2x factory torque settings, and I know the best way of getting access to the bolts.

I really wish people would stop BSing about how long it takes them to do things on car boards. Best case by an experienced owner is not average case and is irrelevant to an inexperienced owner.
