Do you check it like most other auto's?

Drive about 10 miles. Stop on a level surface and with engine running and foot on the break shift down the gears slowly and then back up.

Check fluid level with car still running.

Does this sound right?

Yep, you pretty much have it. Just get the fluid nice and warm, then park for a while with the engine running. Cycle thru all the gears, pausing about two seconds in each. Leave it running, check the fluid on the dipstick.

If you haven't changed to it yet, I highly recommend going to a synthetic fluid.
Made a noticeable difference in my car.

Did the syn make the first to second jerk better?

No, not really. That is still a pretty pronounced shift. Reminds me of when I put a "shift kit" in my '72 Chevelle's 350 Turbo-Hydramatic...lol!

Main thing I noticed with the synthetic is how much better it is in cooler weather, it seems to provide much smoother shifts overall. It also has better viscosity properties so the car will go into overdrive quicker...doesn't take as long to "warm up".

I just snarfed my old fluid out thru the dipstick hole using an oil changing system made for this. You can find them at any boating/marine store for about $20.
