How to bypass the AST?

Anyone have a write up on how to bypass the AST? I got home yesterday and 15 mins later my neighbor banged on my door saying my car was smoking. So i went out and sure enough wasn't smoke it was steam. Poped the hood, after the steam cleared you could see the AST. Top part is completly off. I know I can buy an alum AST. But do I have to or can I just bypass it?
