How accurate is the speedometer?

Greetings. Did a search and found a few threads where the speedometers had failed but nothing as to the reliability (or accuracy) of the 3rd gen speedometers. I'll try and briefly explain where I'm coming from.

While out and about I'll be cruising along the interstate at say...........85 mph. Yet traffic seems to be moving quicker than I would think (if that makes any sense). Meaning they seem to be doing 80 or so, when typically people aren't moving that fast on that stretch of road. Anyway, the whole cluster (except for the gas gauge) works great, just not sure how "accurate" the speedo is after 11 years. Thanks.

I have a 57 Chevy truck and the speedometer still works in that if it tells you anything. The speedo in my 93 R1 and my friends FC still work and are accurate, maybe people were just driving exceptionally fast?

The speedo is pretty accurate but YMMV. Do you have stock diameter tires?

If you want a quick and dirty test, find a road with mileage markers and time it.

mine used to be like that, i'd be on the highway doing "90" and people would be passing me and not looking like they were speeding. Eventually i figured out that one of my ac fuses was removed, so i got one put it in and it fixed it. So it could be some piece of the electrical network in your car is missing or messed up.....speedometers should be pretty accurate...unless the speedometer can't settle on a speed, like it swings from 40-60 in a split second and bounces, in that case you need a new one.

Your electrical system may have somehow been set to kilometers too, i heard something about that when i had troubles with mine, but i don't know much about it.

Mine indicates about 5mph fast at 75 actual. If you have a friend with a gps unit, many of them have speed functions on them. Pretty accurate too.

There is a speedo adjustment, it's a little blue phillips head style "pot" the PITA is you have to have the dash appart, look at the speedo, on the gps, and mess with the screwdriver to get it adjusted.... which is a bit dangerous at 80 mph...

So I'm waiting to get to a dyno, mine's off by a little since I swapped my '93 speedo for my '94 I just got so used to looking at the '94 I had to have it back PITA, can't reccomend this mod if you want to keep the milage on the car as before
