Could you put some description to pictures 5 and 6. Where exactly is that venting to and how did you set it up? Also, can this be done with the R1/2 models with the extra oil coolers?

What are you using for the metal pieces going from inside to outside the car?

Any body else with pictures of engine venting- ghetto or not?

There are some basic descriptions there allready. If you have specific questions, I'd be glad to answer them.

The idea behind this was that, particularly with the twins in the engine bay, there is a lot of heat on this side of the car. Since the oil cooler duct is allready routed through there, Ron's thought was that the negative pressure from air moving across the outlet would help evacuate some of the engine bay heat.

Of couse this kind of assumes that there is more negative pressure "pulling" air though than there is positive pressure "pushing" its way through the front. (I have my doubts..) Otherwise you are blowing hor air (from the oil cooler) into the engine bay.

I have an R1

The flange that I used was an old aftermarket air-cooled VW part, designed to pick up forced air from a 36 hp engine shroud and send it to later model heater boxes. (I know that only 2 or 3 people on the forum knows what that means..) It's just a cast aluminum 2" flange.

 

Yeah, I did this 4 years ago. Had too much time on my hands and the fender was off of the car. If Rufio ever gets my tail lights 99-spec-i-fied, I'll stick a probe in there and drive around a little bit if you like, vented and un-vented. It's been a while since I've had the twins in there and the single with the turbine blanket runs SOOO much cooler, I'm not sure it would tell as much..

And besides, it's just a little hole. My car, while clean, will never be in a show. It's not structural..

 

I don't think this works. There is nothing forcing hot air into that hole, meaning there is no ducting to it.

 

There may be. The concept was that the outside vent is a low pressure area, so would "suck" air. Not yet "proven" but plausable since Mazda expected air from elsewhere (oil coolers) to vent there without being forced into it.

 

I believe it is proven. Its original purpose was to suck air through the oil cooler by using Bernoulli's Principle (fast moving air along side of the car has a lower pressure than the air behind the oil cooler).

But the low pressure/high speed air creating a vacuum theory is quite proven. Look at every airplane in the sky.

I for one think it would work, but I couldn't amke myself drill any sort of hole into my 95 FD

Very old thread, but the idea is still lame.

Notice those big gaps between the engine & engine compartment (you can see the ground)? That's a pretty big hole to circulate air through. While hot "stagnant" air rises. Air flows to the path of least resistance or pressure.

This mod is like cutting a small hole on the wall in your garage to vent the hot air, but you have the garage door open at the same time.

People confuse heat soak with operating temps. In motion, air is circulating through the engine compartment. Plus the engine is not an air cooled VW. So this wont make it run any cooler.

I especially like the pic of the fender liner cut with the screen installed to vent the oil cooler. It would be so beat up after a lapping day I would be more concerned with spinning on my own oil after I punctured it with debris.

 

I guess I just cant see why adding extre vents is such a bad thing

 

Whether it made minimal difference or not, i think that idea is freaking horrible.

They are other better alternatives out there, regardless if its more expensive to buy/perform.

 

....and it is not a 'NACA' style duct at all, to be accurate.
