Hose off of stock air box

I have looked at the pages of the shop manual that I have, and cannot figure out what this hose does. After installing my K&N filter, I noticed it was not connected at the bottom end... is it supposed to be open to atmosphere? What is it for? Is it supposed to be connected?

Thanks guys, your help is always appreciated.

The hose I am talking about is parallel to the mazda print and comes out of the right side of the air box in this pic

Yes, its supposed to be open at the end. Its meant to discharge air quietly. Air can only go out of it. Its a common question as most people are surprised at first when they see this apparently useless hose thats not connected to anything
