horrible clutch smell
horrible clutch smell
guys,
i just realised something... when i did some crazy **** with 1st gear wheel spins on red roads and from stand still...... yes.. tyres smoke alot... i do smell my clutch is giving some smell as well....
even after a minute or so... i still can smell the clutch smell inside the car....with windows closed all the time...
does it mean that my clutch is not strong enough to support my power ? i only have 275 on the wheels...probably 300 on the flywheel i guess.
is it the clutch ?
oh yeah.. stock clutch... the clutch friction plate... no idea what brand.

Even a clutch that could once hold your power will eventually wear out, especially if you drive it hard (drag launches, downshift to compression brake, etc.) Also, be aware that if you are doing a burnout and your clutch is slipping, some/all of that smoke you think is coming from the tires really isn't ;P
And with that thought, I leave you with a classic that's as old as the Internet:

I was brake boosting yesterday and my whole cab compartment was filling up w/ smoke from the clutch slipping. Thought I was on fire! Needless to say it wont be long. I have a prolite clutch w/ only 10000 on it. It has never slipped before. G

I used my dead clutch to the point where I would put it in gear, let the clutch out, and redline it, and it wouldnt move. You can really baby a dead clutch for a long time. Just dont get into it at all.

If you can burn out without much trouble the clutch is probably enough torque capacity.
As for the smell, yes the clutch stays hotter longer and IME if you get it hot enough to stink it takes quite a while to cool off. The couple of times when I've rode it hard enough to smell it took several minutes at least to quit smelling.

wicked... i'm not screwed... probably need to stop doing these kind of *****. will stick to track style or drift style.... drag style too stress for the clutches and gear boxes.
are there any clutch that won't give these kind of smell when i do some launches ?
