Hopefully Joining the Club.

I have always liked the look of the RX-7. Recently I have found a 1993 model with Touring package. It is black on a red interior and only has 33,000 original miles. It is within my price range however my mom is worried because it is an 11 year old car. I can see her concern but the owner has taken it to be serviced in a shop that works on rotary engines.

I am not just another punk 16 year old that wants to have the fastest coolest car on the block. I have previously owned a 1995 Nissan Sentra that because I maintained it my mom is helping me move up. I have done 1 Performance Driving School and am eagerly awaiting more. I HAVE had one ticket. My grandma had just died and I was trying to get home.

Anyway, I'd like some advice on the car I am looking at buying. The owner claimed to have all the records.

I have been searching for the past hour. I would like more information if that isn't a problem.

There are thousands of useful threads containing more information on this car than you will probably ever need. I'm surprised you expect to be able to handle this car with less than a year driving experience, but can't find information on your own.

I guess I do not see the relation between my finding information and my ability to drive a car. My daily driver for the past few months has been either an Audi TT Quatro or a Acura TL Type-S, both I have driven without troubles. I would like some oppinions on my current situation from owners of RX-7s whom I am confident know what they are talking about. It is sometimes hard to seperate BS from fact. I have run into a site talking about the 2004-2005 RX-7, a v8 RX-7, and a 4 door RX-7.

I have been watching this forum for awhile now and knew that people here knew their stuff for the most part. I have been a member of many forums and have accumulated god knows how many posts, I am well aware how to use the search feature. I have read many of the "thousands" of threads and I have not found the information I was looking for or I wouldn't be awake at 12:30 on my day off looking for it. I really need to go to bed because I have a doctors appointment tomarrow... err later this morning.

If you do not mind, what is your opinion on a 1993 RX-7 with around 33-34k miles that has been taken care of in a Rotary shop. It is a Texas car so has not had to deal with ice, salt, etc. He has all papers including carfax and is asking a little over 17.

Thanks.

For that low mileage, if the rest of the car is in equally nice condtion, that is a good price. If it was mine, I wouldn't let it go for under 20.

Well if your mommy can afford to pay for the car and insurance. She can probably pay for a new engine too... so I dont see the problem.

A little self-pimpage here, I'm trying to compile a meaningful FAQ section here, I'll have it alphabetized as soon as I can get a moderator to give me the ability to edit my posts after 30 minutes have passed.

Here ya go, second topic there, 'buying a used RX-7', should be plenty of info for you.

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...hreadid=306900

PS: these cars are expensive and powerful and need plenty of maintenance and I would not recommend anyone with less than 5 years' driving experience own one, budget at least $100/month extra to spend maintaining the car assuming you can do most of the work yourself. You might not spend an entire $100 this month, but just wait until two months from now...

Repairs are not a problem with a 16 yr old. If you have a 3rd gen and are 16 you are driving illegally with the exception of the people willing too pay $9850 yr cdn for insurance. Problem with that is that their are no 16 yr olds that can afford it. Get a 2nd gen if you want too learn about rotaries. Don't be stupid, If you kill someone it not only ends their life but it ends yours too.

Seriously, from a '95 Sentra, the next step up might be a '00 Impreza RS, that will be plenty faster than a Sentra, still pretty practical, and pretty cool-looking IMHO. I used to own one, they're plenty fast from the factory. If you need that 'bling' factor, get a non-turbo Supra, RX-7 or MR2. All of those will be great cars, though the MR2 might be a bit dangerous. Maybe look at the SVT Focus.

If you want to attract the ladies, get a damn truck. On second thought, don't get a truck, too many of those out there...

Your 16 and dont have the money for this car. Give up and buy something else. You will not be able to afford the upkeep and maintanence on the car, you asked for opnions and I just gave you mine! I hate it when kids like this come up and get cars like this just given to them, and don't give me the bullshit of you worked hard for it. No you didn't, your only 16. I worked my *** off to get this car and I'm still working my *** off to make the car and myself happy . So please, do yourself a favor and everyone else a favor and buy something else. I'm sorry but your buying this car for all the wrong reasons. and another sorry, but I felt like being the dick this time.

Also, insurance for a 16 y/o on a twin turbo car is going to be well over $500 a month. Plus the cost of car payments unless paid in full. Then you have to think about maintanence costs such as engine rebuild when it needs one, and other costs. I'm not listing everything for you. And don't tell us that you can't find the information, please. It's easy. go to the archives and search in there as well as the normal 3rd gen section. All the information is in there. I don't care if you know how to use the search function or not, your not using it properly, so go use it properly please.

First, I'm not going to give the pompous I'm older and richer ****. They are not stupid though - there is a long list of young drivers who buy these cars and stomp them because of their ignorance, lack of resources to maintain them, and incredible knack for totalling them.

Honestly, it puts a pit in my stomach knowing someone is going to take a wonderfully preserved 93 and use it as a daily driver, park it in a high school parking lot, and inevitably make mistakes with it. I might have been the most responsible teenager ever, and I am glad my current FD wasn't in my hands back then. I can only hope your mistakes will be minor and not end up in damage or accident.

Also, you tried searching and didn't get what you want. That's because searching this forum for information is a bitch unless you've been reading it for a long time and know the keywords to what you're looking for. The Buying a Used RX-7 article is a good one. Aside from that, there isn't much here for someone who doesn't yet know enough to ask specific questions.

I wrote a review on the 1994 model on www.epinions.com. I recommend you read that since I put a lot of effort into writing it. Specifically, the sections about maintenance requirements and it's poor performance as a daily driver. If you really have the $$ to buy at $17k, plus all the maintenance, and insurance, you're into the price class of a lightly used RX-8. And that would be a fantastic car for you. Then after a few more years (and you're on your own income) an FD might be a good choice as a second car.

Dave
