Honest opinion on price of 94
I purchased a 94 FD touring Black/Tan last week. The car has 138K original miles. The car is all original except the clutch and battery and water pump. The interior of the car is spotless, infact there is almost no wear on the seat. Outside is also very nice with only about 2 small dings on the car. The owners said they have not driven above 3500 RPM and kept in garage. The car drives real nice with the exception of a few minor things I need fixed.
My question....What would you have paid for this car? Again, engine is strong, very strong.
Thanks! I find this forum so great!

Banned. I got OWNED!!!
the major points that bring down the value is the mileage and the fact that he has supposedly never even tapped into the second turbo. if he is telling the truth and he has never revved it up, the engine would be in terrible shape right now because of carbon buildup. also, if the car has 138K on the original engine, get ready to replace it very soon. no matter how well he maintained it, one engine is not going to go much more than 138K.
i would not pay more than $14,000 for this car. (actually, I would not buy it cause im not interested in a black/tan FD).

I paid 12,700 for it. carfax showed it in CA and NC alot. I am guessing that the car was driven on highway alot. I don't know how long the engine will last, but it is VERY strong.
When an FD's engine starts to go, does it lose power before, or is it just as str ing till the end?

That price sounds about right. The thing is that rx7 will need a rebuild no matter what. Even if it feels VERY strong, it wont last much more longer. The most mileage on 1 engine was like 120k miles or something like that, but that was on this forum...
An rx7 engine doesnt last long. if maintained well with reliability mods, about 70,000 miles maybe more. but without proper maintainance the engine wont last as much.
if i were you, i would get a rebuild very soon!

It's cheaper, and most people seem to agree that rebuilds are better. If you go with a quality shop, you'll get a very strong engine and you can have other things done as well (replacement vacuum hoses, engine porting, etc).

Just maintain the car as normal and don't worry about rebuilding the engine until it actually needs it. You may surprise everyone with how many more miles you can go before the need to rebuild becomes clear.

Yeah, save the money until the car goes bad someday. You got a good price. Highway miles are extreme gentle on the car and if most of it is indeed hiway miles, your engine could last another 40k miles. I think some ppl have 170k on their original engine. That's very rare but not impossible if the car is well taken care of. Is the engine pretty hot? If so, you may want to have the thermostat replaced, fan relay checked out. Keeping the car cool definitely will extend the life of the car. Rick's Rotary Performance is near by you and I've heard all good things about them. So, take it to them for a checkup at your next service.
Also, do all the maint religiously. Don't every forget to change the oil, and other fluids or else....

Well...
The engine heat gauge only goes less than half way up. when I park the car after driving, I do hear 'boiling' in the engine for awhile. Its likely anti freeze boiling. It has a small Antifreeze/oil leek after I park the car. Takin it to ricks next saturday to find out what it needs. the only other problem is when I break, the car wobbles a little.
What does it really mean with detonation? How do I know when It needs rebuilt?
