Holy Sh#t...99 Turbos installed

Well guys, I fired up my car tonight after installing some low mile 99 turbos. I haven't fabbed up a pipe going to my front mount so the turbo air was just blowing out of the y-pipe (just wanted to run it for a few minutes). So I blip the throttle and I can actually see oil mist blowing out of the y pipe. Several more blips and I have several tablespoons of Castrol sitting in the y pipe. Do either of the 2 hoses that connect to the primary turbo inlet involve mass amounts of oil? ...or is it back to the drawing board?

thanks

This is exactly why I'm not installing anything having to do with the engines on this car until I see someone else do it.

What is your oil pressure? That doesn't sound normal, but perhaps it isn't so far off. With the hoses hooked up, the boost pressure will fight the oil coming through the seals. Could it be oil in the pipes from the old turbos?

Thanks for the reply, Max. Oil pressure is normal and the pipes are clean. I *think* its the lower line on the turbo inlet pipe -I just pulled it and oil was dripping out pretty good. I'm just trying to figure out what this line is now.

Do the 99 turbos use as much oil as the older ones? If not get a pill like the M2's have.

I think what happened was that I changed my oil last night and I noticed some going into that side port inside the filler neck. I think that port has a hose that connects over to the primary inlet. Anyways I put my mouth over the filler neck (no jokes, please LOL) and blew and a bit of oil came out of the offending line. I'll fire it up tomorrow (babies are asleep) and see.

Take it easy on ArchangelX guys, geez! Its a complicated car and its pretty overwhelming when you first get it. And then again anything major goes wrong. I would guess that less than half of the people on this forum have ever done anything beyond changing the oil. At least ArchangelX sounds like he would give it a try with the support of an example.

Or maybe I missed something.

The oil misting is not a good sign. The several tablespoons full makes me think that it's probably not residual in the y-pipe or something like that. It's weird though ... usually I've seen the oil misting on the turbine side, not the compressor side. How low-mile are these turbos? Have you replaced the oil inlet and outlet lines? Maybe what's happening is you got some deposits in the lines causing pressure to buildup before the carbon seal ... hence the misting and blowby. (Damn insomnia ... I need to get some sleep.)

Nah...it's just my wife would kill me if she had to drop me off everyday cuz I screwed something up.

It's different when you're playing around with what's currently your daily driver...which this car will be in a week. I'm going to have to pick up a beater before I can start delving into the engine. Plus..I'd need a garage..which I don't have. I'm not sure the apartment complex would really appreciate me tearing the engine out of a car in their parking lot.

Anyways, some of this is pretty complicated stuff, and right now, with the knowledge that I've got about the RX-7 I WOULDN'T feel comfortable about digging into something like say that rat's nest full of 76 hoses because I honestly don't know where everyone of them goes....

I don't have the factory manuals yet, and I only have a slight understanding of the rotary engine itself. As far as engines go, I've done everything except removing the engine myself, that includes alternators, distributors, pulleys, bolt-ons, brakes..bla bla..the simple stuff.

Now...if I had a book right in front of me...with diagrams, bla bla...I wouldn't really mind it at all(that's the only information you get in the AF when taking things apart, a T.O., or TM, and get to work soldier).

If you consider jumping into something you have a dim understanding of, screwing it up, blowing your engine because of stupidity, a smart thing to do...

Well, hell..I think I'm going outside right now, ripping that rats nest out with my bare hands...

Anyways..here's a big just to make ya'll happy!!

I think he already cleared this up, by saying that he poured oil into the breather line on the oil filler neck.

I believe that statement stands on its own merits.
