the dynos were performed back to back. i took the car to pettit because the previous mechnic had *ucked it up. pettit fixed the issues and then dyno'd the car for me when i went down to pick it up. the car dyno'd at 320 RWHP at about 12.5 PSI. Cam had forgotten to replace the HKS Twin AMP (he had taken it off when diagnosing the engine). Cam then reconnected the HKS and dyno'd the car again. He too was interested in the results. Curiously, the car dyno'd 10 RWHP LESS across the entire band.

Cam also has several rotary engine designers in the shop that day dynoing specialty rotary engines. the designers theorized that because the "spark" was now being run through an additional component, the engine would experience a delay in the spark cycle, thus producing less horsepower. the dynos proved them to be correct.

Not to knock you Dave, but I'm not so sure that the HKS TP was the reason for the HP drop. I dyno'ed my car 3 times back to back and there was a difference of almost 8 hp. This had nothing to do with the HKS TP. I would think that heaksoak would be more of a factor.

nope, heat soak wasn't a factor. Cam allowed plenty of time between runs. Also, after removing the HKS, he dyno'd the car again and I had gained back the 10 HP.

That is very interesting...makes me wonder if spending the $500.00 is worth it

I had hear so much about the unit I bought it and into the "hype". All I can say is that for me, the dyno proved the unit actually hurt my HP.

David, did Cam have any ideas on why that happened in your car? Has he seen the HKS do that in other owners cars?

Its just not something commonly reported about the unit.

With all due respect to David and Cam, one isolated dyno experience is not enough to convince me that the HKS TP causes a loss of power. I'd like to see more proof from others if possible.

I don't buy into the "delay caused by running the spark through an additional component resulting in less horsepower" argument, either. Transistors work in microseconds, easily quick enough to keep up with any portion of an engine cycle.

As I said earlier, this was my experience with the unit. For me, it didn't work in my car. The dyno doesn't lie. I was very surprised to say the least. This was the first HKS that Cam had dyno'd so he really didn't know what to expect.

The rotary engine designers were the persons that discussed the "additional component" theory. Don't know if this is accurate or not, but the two of them both guessed correctly that the unit would lower horsepower. Remember, I was on the other side of the fence (thought it would help the car) before the dyno.

I'd also be interested in dynos from others that had the HKS installed.

So far I have read like 50 positive and 1 negative opinions on HKS TP. That's like 98% success. And all guys with M2 Stage3 ECU got rid of top end hesitation with it. Its next on my list.

Can it be used on a car with only a stock ECU, but has a 3" exhaust and a down pipe? Hehe, just curious.

i dont think it will yield a benfot for your mods. I think its only when u added fuel and are running more boost.

Yes, you are correct that I'm the only one that posted a negative review. I'm also the only one, to my knowledge, that had a dyno performed with and without the unit. My perception, before the dyno, was that the unit worked. I'll also state that my top end hesitation improved but it did cost me HP.

For those that claim to have had a positive experience, how about posting a dyno with proof of the results.

I've got a dyno graph showing a run before and with it after. Mine showed a constant 8 rwhp across the rpm range. At the time I had a m2 stage 3 ecu. I've got a dyno session set up on the 16th to test some exhausts, I can throw in 2 runs, 1 with it on and another with it off with no change other than it being off. Not sure what happened with your hks, but that's not normal.

i cant see how a unit that increases spark output can cause power lose........ it just dosent make sense..

Broaden your knowledge my friend

I think member named Rated R1 or something like that had it dynoed. And he gained like 15hp or something like that as I remember.

It's good if someone else has had a positive experience. It looks like Tim Benton has offered to have a dyno run done - I think this can be used for more proof, one way or the other.

Spark Plug life

I can't speak to the power/dyno issues since I've not done one with and without it, but I can confirm spark plug longevity is decreased with the unit (at least my experience). Without it I could get 10K miles out of a set of stock plugs, and with the unit that was cut to 5K tops. Now that I'm running 10.5's that is a bit of a bite out of the wallet (going to 11s next), but I've never had ignition breakup with it. Like Herbleny, I change oil every 2K miles and plugs with every other oil change.

Remember folks, we're also modifiying these cars between to almost 2 times the stock horsepower, and not all the components of the engine and ignition are changed along with the power mods. Something has to wear out faster when you do this. The rotary combustion chamber is a very hot kiln......
