HKS Twin Or MSD. What is the diff if any.

Ive been doing some reading and i have noticed that there are some fellow fd's that are running the HKS twin power pack. I have also read that what this does is extend the spark time a little longer. what i cant find out is, does it do this for all the coils, Both leading and trailing, and also does it replace what the MSD does. Right now i have an MSD 6A on the leading ignition. trailing is just hooked up factory.

The HKS does work for all coils. That is one of its advantages, along with a harness you can order that make it plug and play. The price increase for the prodduct is one of its recent disadvantages

I just got rid of my twinpower for an AEM ignition. The difference is substantial. My idle is SO smooth now. I didn't think I had any issues with my ignition before after running the AEM, I don't see why anybody would go to the HKS.

I heard that the HKS unit doesnt increase spark that it just doubles it or something along those lines. Other units like AEM and MSD increase the level of spark. Which AEM unit did you use jspec? or is there only one? Do you use one per leading plug or have one unit control both? Why do you think it would help you idle that much? sorry for the long list of questions.

.

The AEM unit I purchased is the 4 channel. They also have an 8 channel, but that would be used for cars with five cylinders or more, or a 20B.

The AEM accepts 4 inputs. For the FD, since we have 3 coils, you would simply ground the 4th input wire on the AEM. It accepts both leading and trailing and thus fires leading and trailing. Unlike the MSD, you only have to buy one AEM. It took me maybe 2 hrs. to do the entire install. It's got quite a spark I tell you...AEM CDI = 480 VDC = painful

Dont mess with it....if you have a 6a on your leading with factory trailing your fine. The only thing you might consider doing is replacing your factory coil with the T2 facotry coil as its actually a stronger coil.

That set up is enough for around 600rw

I wouldnt mess with it....well maybe if you have problems with it but if not just leave your ignition alone, its fine.

In my opinion switching from what you have to a HKS would be a down grade

But I bet they didn't try the AEM first. I loved the HKS too...until I installed the AEM.

93BlackFD
"mine is currently in the hands of AEM, they are trying to figure out why it randomly cuts off and disables the car

it has a thermo switch or something that prevents overheating, glad they mention this in the manual

********"

I take it you have not had this problem with yours. Where do you have your box mounted? In another post 93BlackFD said the AEM techs suggested that he mount the box in the passanger compartment to stop it from overheating. Frankly, that sounds like a royal PITA to me.

Not true, both HKS and AEM are CDI (capacity discharge ignition) units. AEM uses two capacitors. HKS also incorporates some sort of "transistor method." Anyway I hear good things about many different brands but I also hear bad things. However I never hear bad things about the HKS unit. I'll probably buy one to see if it improves things on the top end once the spark plugs get old. You can't get power from these units unless there is a power loss due to poor ignition.
