Make sure to see the conclusions:

It is questionable how accurate the original source of data is, as HKS are proven to sell more induction kits than any one of the others featured in the test, and yet there induction kit rates as the worst kit in the test. This suggests that either HKS rely upon their brand name to sell their 'poorly' manufactured air filters, or that the original Japanese test was nothing more than a PR stunt to promote the lesser known equipment. HKS and Blitz continue to be the best selling induction kits in the UK, and are used by Middlehursts, Hiteq and Abbey Motorsport as their first choice when the induction kit modification is carried out.

There are tests that show the difference. Some foam filters perform better than the cotton filters, some don't. It also depends on the number of layers for th foam as to it's performance and filtration. Typically, the better filtration has lower flow rates so it depends on what you want out of the performance. One of the main benefits of foam is that it doesn't degrade performance as it gets dirty. This isn't so much of a problem now that most of the paper base filters are gone, but it still a concern to some people which is why foam filters are still used.

I paid no where near 635 for mine brand new.

Let me also add that this is a HUGE PAIN to install. I did the first half of mine today (with blistering cold weather) but stopped because my back hurt soo much from the constant bent over position.

I cant believe how mazda created something that makes minor wrenching a huge headache.

Installing intakes really isnt a big deal. I think if it takes 20 minutes the install an intake that is a long time. Nothing compared to installing an American downpipe.

No, dont get me wrong, the installation should really take 20 minutes.

I sorta f'ed up on it though.

I tried to install the primary pipe first without the filter on it only to find out it is IMPOSSIBLE to install the filter after the primary pipe is already on there, especially since i have FMIC piping in the way.

So i had to take it off again, install the filter, then reinstall the pipe again. That alone was about 45 minutes.

I dropped the 10MM nuts twice and lost them somewhere in my belly pan lol. (thank god hks provides 2 brand new ones).

Now i need 3 rubber caps to cap off the nipples on the intake tubes and run an extenstion vaccum hose that wouldnt reach the new hks primary elbow and im done.

Anyone know where i can get those rubber caps?

Changed mine out to K&N filters. There's a little less surface area but at least they actually work as a filter.

I used the intake with the foam filters for over a year an a half. Instead of replacing them I decided to change them out to more traditional filters
