HKS Fan Controller - anyone used it? Any thoughts?

First off -

http://www.takakaira.com/asp/templat...JjFgGgbdCeahDc

There's a full English writeup of the fan controller. It's in the same case as HKS's current turbo timer, size-wise.

Basics -

- Comes with a water temp sender, shows the digital water temp on the screen. You can set an "overheat" point where the screen will flash and the unit will beep. Handy!
- You can attach up to 2 other HKS temp senders to it to monitor and warn. Oil temp is probably the only application there.
- You can control both fans start and stop temperature to 1 degree C.
- You can optionally control a water spray for an intercooler.

Street price is about $170 or so, and it is commonly available in the US.

I'm hoping to have an FD in the near future, and I'm shopping the best reliability mods right now . Water temp gauge is a must, and this is real close to the price of a quality temp gauge, with the extra ability to control the fans.

Now, is fan control that big of a deal? In other words, would this be advantageous? I'm sure it would alleviate having to get the Miata thermoswitch, as you could simply set the fan to come on whenever. But, is the stock control system "improve-on-able", or does it more or less work OK stock?

HKS also makes an FD3S-specific adapter for the fan controller. The ONLY info I can find on it is on their Japanese site, and it's vague in translation -

" The adapter for fan controller RX7 who can make it avoid that a fan controller drives a direct PUROA motor in case a fan controller is used by FD3S RX-7 ]-7 is a new appearance!! "

Whatever that means . But, that part is only like $10-15 at least, and I'm sure HKS USA could source it. Dunno if it's necessary or just makes life easier.

Any thoughts would be mucho appreciated.

Dale

Well, I guess that controller would depend on what you will be doing with the car. IMO, the Miata Thermoswitch does more than an adequate job for cooling. I really don't see the need for more control over the fans than that myself.

i have seen this unit on that website before, and thought about it. i thought it was really cool and all, nice fancy unit. but its basically the same thing as having a water temp gauge and a fan mod (custom fan switch where you can turn on fans when you wish inside the cabin). only difference is that you would save your self from reaching over and turning the fans on and off when you see your gauge get a little on the hot side.

I was thinking about modifying the fan wiring to run on high speed using a simple temperature activated switch... Have anyone done this?
