Lightbulb Here's some food for though, extra oil cooling theory

ok here's the theory,

since our rotaries run hot, turbo cook oil, require at least 1 oil cooler, preferably 2 of em.... why don't we use the idealogy of cooling systems. put a small version of a radiator fan behind our oil coolers. here's my thought on the advantages...

when idling in traffic, forces air flow throuh the coolers preventign heat soak from idiling, ( especially on hot days here in texas... argh)

let you turn off car faster with turbo timer... if you force the oil to cool faster with the fans you wouldn't have to stay , or wait as long.

granted heat soak could happen regardless, but constant flow would prolong it right?

those with dual oil coolers should be able to cool the oil even more then us "base" singles

disadvantage would be:

a little more drain on the alt

i'm unsure of my physics but... i may cause some blockage when at high speeds (the fat itself) but then again... if it hurt more then it helped... manufacturers would not do it.

sorry if this has been discussed or proven wrong.. bored at work... and it popped in my head thinking it may help out our little engines =-)

I think generally the oil doesn't overheat when you are stopped, so having fans wouldn't add enough benefit to offset the additional complexity, weight, and packaging concerns.

My experience:
I have peak/hold oil and water temp gauges on my car. In a recent dyno tuning session, my peak water temp was 195F and the peak oil temps were 224F. That is about as hard as you would ever run the car while sitting still and the oil temps got high but not dangerously high.

I don't need a turbo timer, and I don't think most people that use them need it, either. I think people are a bit too obsessive about heat with these cars, or at least obsessive in non-productive areas. If your car doesn't overheat while you are driving it, that's pretty much all you have to worry about. That itself isn't an easy goal if you drive the car under extreme conditions. But turbo timers and other extreme cool-down procedures after "normal" driving is a waste of time, IMO.

There was someone on this forum who posted about their fan setup on both the IC and oil cooler. I can't find it right now, but the thread is out there...

With my dual 25-row coolers (not even ducted...), I have yet to exceed 200F oil temps in street driving, even in a traffic jam on a hot summer day. Typically, my oil temps are almost too cold -- on the highway on a cold day, I think they ARE too cold -- below 170F.

My track temps have been no hotter than 220F, except for one track day at Streets of Willows on a 103F+ day, where they hit 230F (I think the 230F water temps were a lot more of a concern...).

Fans aren't going to help me, and I doubt they would be of much benefit to those with the stock dual coolers either. To those poor souls with a stock single cooler...I would upgrade to dual coolers before trying to figure out a fan system that added more weight and complexity to the car and might not even do much.

Yeah, IIRC, it was the same guy who was going to put dual alternators on his FD...

...unless you've got one of those big 25 or 34 row RE single units...

Since we are on the topic of oil cooling...

Does anyone know what the oil cooler thermostat temp is set at?

while cruising in winter my oil temps can drop down below 70deg C..158F

stock twin coolers....

My Mocal oilstat opens at 180 +/- 10F according to the specs. Oil temps (measured after the coolers) are regularly 140F when cruising on the highway, and rise to ~160-170 stuck in city traffic.

Where are you measuring your oil temps?

that location is fine, not most ideal, but easy access and install and its before the oil coolers. and most cars run cold in the winter in japan. about how cold was it outside when u took that reading?
