help with spirit R mods

hi - i'm new to the forum but i am a long time rotary enthusist. i have a spirit R type A and want to do a mild tune to it. It is fairly new with less than 10K km on it.

I have extensively read through the forums including the reliability mods but haven't got my head around the exhaust side of things and am hoping some ppl out there who have done what i'm planning to do can help out.

my plan is

intake - ARC M103 smic (only mild tune so don't need something crazy)
aluminium AST
vented bonnet
power FC
radiator - leave alone for time being - i will monitor temps - i know this is a recommended mod for american cars but apparantly later jap cars had bigger radiators. if i need to - koyo aluminium radiator.

Exhaust - this bit i am unsure of....

i have seen plenty of suggestions that a front pipe is a good first mod cos it replaces the pre cat resulting in less engine heat and freer flow but do the japanese cars have a pre cat or is this just on american spec cars??

If jap cars DON'T have precat restricting flow - my plan is for a catback exhaust +/- high flow ceramic cat (worried that metal cat may result in spiking/creep)

If jap cars DO have the precat - i am thinking SMB front pipe and SMB catback system

- i only want a very mild tune and am looking for no more than 12psi on the turbos. Bearing this in mind - do i have to do anything more for the exhaust than just a cat back??

thanks for any advice or comments

Cat-back is enough. You don't have a pre-cat, so if you change downpipes you'll get a little more flow but for a 12psi car it's not a big deal.

High-flow is optional, esp. considering your stock parts are like new.

Remember, tuning follows the mods, not the other way around. Tuning HAS to be perfect - lean is not allowed. Generally speaking the tune changes with the boost setting, so if you add a flow mod and the boost increases and you don't have a boost controller to turn it back down, you need tuned.

I think your radiator is fine for another 5 years, or unless you get too hot. Next time you ahve your undertray off, use some contact cement and open-cell foam to fill in all the gaps around / in front of the radiator.

thanks for feedback - gee that was quick!!

dave - yes i will definitiely be getting PFC tune once intercooler and exhaust are on. i know these are famous last words but these are the only mods i want to do and i will leave it at this level.

only further mods will be for reliability - eg radiator if needed, or filling gaps arnd radiator for air flow.

i was going to use the PFC for boost control - i understand this is ok for mild tune with standard solenoids and wastegate?

vrmmmpshhh - i agree the full SMB exhaust is a work of art - do you have any info if this will induce boost spike problems - especially if i am only using PFC to control boost rather than a EBC? i don't want to create more problems for myself especially if i am not after an agressive tune. - i presume boost creep won't be a problem unless i go for their metal cat or a midpipe.

i have a feeling that high flow cat and down pipe may be over the top for what i want (but i don't want to have to go back a fit these later and then retune PFC)

i don't have any good pics at the momemnt but am happy to put some rough ones up if anyone can tell me how

- another question i had - is the boost pattern for a series 8/ version V/VI still 10-8-10psi? if so why does it make more power than earlier versions? I only ask this as there is no point getting carried away with mods if my boost is already 11 or 12psi factory.

thanks again guys. any further comments welcome

Your stock boost should be more than 10-8-10. I think it comes out to around 11.5 max.

Hey Kev8,

Where in OZ are you located? I a Spirt R Type A is dame sweet, In OZ or newhere really you probably dont mod this car if you want to keep its selling value... these cars with mods will not sell as well as stock versions.. its a sad fact of the 1500models made... but.. if you choose to mod it...

These are a following Parts I have been collecting for my Type R

SMIC, I think for a RE-Amemiya Version 2.0
ARC or AutoEXE Carbon Air Box I am running AutoEXE
RE-Amemiya 16Bit ECU with Plug in EBC
RE-Amemiya Dump
RE-Amemiya Mid pipe
RE-Amemiya Dolphin Tail Pipe
Upgraded Twin Turbo Actuator Kit
Good tune, the car will run about 380-400HP with stock turbos and engine with this setup and be reliable aswell (Full response set up)

All these parts make the engine bay look almost 100% Stock :oD

Lucky boy!.........

If I owned a spirit r, the only thing I would do would be a comprehensive service on it every 6 months. (As I would probably drive it 10 miles in a year!)

But on a serious note, the only thing I would change if you were after a mild bit of tuning would be:

1.) Cat back exhaust (I agree with the RE dolphin as it's outlet direction is kind to your paintwork!)
2.) Apexi PowerFC

So you could get a nice 300 hp out of the motor, yet still return to stock easy enough.

............... but even the above would be pushing it for me with a car like that. Damn thats nice. Im truely jealous!

Wow, I wish I could afford one. I'm going to be buying Spirit R parts once I finish my engine and custom twin set up. The goal is to have a Spirit R look with a custom twin turbo set up.

yeah - i'm pretty lucky to have it and also lucky that when it arrived it was actually in good condition

i'm probably going to just do cat back - i think fujitsubo legalis r - because this seems to be one of the quietest on the market - plus fujitsubo quality.

i have a PFC and vented bonnet to go on

the intercooler will probably just round things off.

i realize this will hurt resale but i'm thinking of hanging on to it for a long time

i am trying to organise a dyno run to work out boost numbers for turbos - i will let you know if i find out - i haven't really seen this published on any forums.

If dave is right and it is already at 11.5 psi - is there any point in laying out $$ if i am not raising it by much?

will putting a more efficient intercooler in mean that "11.5psi" will be denser and therefore more power with same boost?? (i am trying to justify the intercooler )

Published boost was .76 bar in the V and version VI cars, which includes the Spirit, no idea on the transition.

boost figures are in

fairly flat

2700rpm - 11psi
3500 - 11.5psi
4300 - 9psi
5000 - 11psi
5500 - 10psi

then tapers off to 9psi at 7000rpm

Thanks,

You should get the complete 3.5" SMB down pipe, resonated high flow cat and exhaust. If you are running hot, change your radiator with Fluidyne or similar direct fit and get some Stillway oil coolers that are a direct drop replacement. Get the down pipe ceramic heat coated. Do the AdamC intake mod with a K&N filter to keep it stock looking. I would consider the car stock with those mods. You could consider tuning your OEM ECU or storing it for the stock value as well.

thats the flare!!! almost all jap cars have that flare in there so you can signal other people if you get stuck in a snow storm etc. just replace it with a torch light and use it at a soccer game lol
