most likely its the bushings. honda/acura people have the same problem with the shifter ratteling while in gear when they install a shortshifter. try replacing the shifter bushings.

the tranny guy wants $600 to fix the bearings, i just want to make sure its the bearings and not the shortshifter before i pluck down $$.

It is not the bearings! It is what Merciless said. FD + short shifter = rattle.

If you want to check something to make you feel better, unbolt the B&M and make sure there is enough gear lube in the reservoir.

After I put my B&M on my FD it rattled a lot too. It gets better the longer it is on...or else...I just got used to it..

Later,
Patrick

You will have to take the shift **** off, then pull the center console plastic piece up (being careful not to break any tabs).

Then you will see 4 nuts holding a rubber boot thing down...I believe. You want to remove these nuts, then the boot thing, and any insulation. There is also a plastic collar on there. Make sure you remember what sequence these came off. You will want to put them back in the same manner.

Then you will get to the B&M. It should look like a big blue block. It will have 4 allen head bolts securing it. You will have to loosen these up and remove them. Be careful not to drop them. I am not sure where they will end up...

Then you will have to pry the B&M off because it should have RTV sealing it to the tranny housing. Once that is off, you will see fluid (you should see fluid). That is the resivour. Make sure it it full.

Reassemble in the same manner...making sure to re-apply RTV to seal the tranny housing.

Here is a helpful link:
http://www.mazdatrix.com/faq/ssinstal.htm

This will be a bit different...because it isn't a third gen, but they tell you what type of tranny fluid to use...and how much to add.

Hope that helps.

Later,
Patrick
