Help! I think my crank wheel trigger is bent?

On my old engine the little trigger is perpendicular to the dia of the wheel. On the new engine it is canted to one side and looks to be bent. The yellow line shows the angle it is, the red line shows how the old one is. Is this a problem? Should I straighten this to look like the old one or maybe just put the old one on?

Strighten carefully, then rotate the crank and be sure the wheel is not rubbing on the triggers and the clearance between the triggers and the wheel is equal distant all the way around .

Replace it...this little "thingy" sets your timing on your engine. I would not even risk "trying" to straighten it back to a stock setting.

Ya, if you still have the one off your "old" engine use it... Good find, that would nave been a real pain to diagnose after the engine was installed.

Thanks guys. I'm just going to put my old one back on.

This is the 2nd thing I've had to fix. There was also a missing stud on the turbo/intake side of the engine. I am SO glad I kept my old engine around and didn't immediately ship it back! Although I did archive a lot of pictures of the teardown, it would have been more of a bitch to go thru the pics rather than just have the other engine to look at.

It's really odd that it bent without any apparent warpage elsewhere. At least that I can see in the pic.

Yeah, that is what I was thinking so I looked closer and there is a spot that has about .050 runout, bent backwards. I looked at my old engine in the shipping crate and noticed that there is an elevated portion of the container that is in just the right spot to cause damage like this if the engine rocked forward. The engine is strapped down inside the container but...it has quite a bit of movement potential.

Tom

why not? it's easy to fix.
pop it off and carefully clamp it in a vise going all around. test fit it back to the car and when it's straight, you're good to go.
