Help...I need to find a 5 rib belt about 29 inches long
The belt that came with my alternator and waterpump pulleys is too long. I have a custom racing main pulley. The belt that came with the pulley kit is about 1.5 to 2 inches too long. I need a 5 rib belt that is about 29 inches long.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I ended up using a 4-rib belt aswell. You'll have to take the belt down to your nearest Autozone, Kragen, Napa etc... and measure it up with the smallest 5-rib they carry. If they don't have it, a 4-rib will work just fine.

Just go around to auto parts stores and ask. Most belts are numbered uniformly:
295K5
3 digits together = belt length (add decimal)
single digit = # of ribs
So in the above example, the belt is 29.5" and is 5 rib.
Anything from a 29 to a 30 inch and 4 or 5 rib will work, so it shouldnt be hard to find one. Dont have them look up a part for a specific car, explain to them that this is a custom project and you need those specs.

I got a 6 rib Goodyear Gatorback belt and just cut off one rib carefully with a pair of scissors... it has been on my FD for about 3 years now with no problems.

Your best bet is to go to a local Autozone or NAPA and say you need a 5-ribbed Serpentine belt 29 or 29.5-inches long.
For a Goodyear Gatorback, the pn# would most likely be 4050290 or 4050295, or for metric:
5PK710 (29-inches long) or 5PK722 (29.5-inches)
However, I don't think it is made.
A 4-ribbed one does exist at Autozone:
Goodyear Gatorback pn# 4040290

Note in my post I said "most belts" not all are numbered universally. I have never had a problem tracking down appropriate V or serpentine belts by decipering the part numbers. But of course not every aftermarket company follows this same pattern, yet you can usually study the numbers for a minute and figure out that they've just been transposed. The 290 and the 5 are still present in the PN posted above, yet as pointed out the number is not exactly what I posted that it might look like.
Since this seems to be somewhat uncommon information (as evidenced by the few posts on the subject) I figured I'd help out by posting what I know. But now that I've officially been e-bitch slapped, I guess I'll stand back and let you take it from here.

Goodyear's Gatorbacks follow two conventions, one for English/inches measurements, and the other for metric lengths.
4= Serpentine Belt
04/05/06= number of ribs
xxx=length in inches
y=length in tenth of inches
4050290 = Serpentine Belt; 5-ribs; 29-inches long EXACTLY
for metric it would read:
X= number of ribs
PK= Poly-Serpentine Belt
xxxx= length in millimeters
5PK0710 = 5 ribs; Poly-serpentine; 710mm long

Seems like a lot of people lately are sackriding goodyear belts. I like a dayco personally. With a serpentine belt slippage is usually a minimal issue regardless, so it's not much of an issue on an FD. Belt selection is often more important on an FC with V belts that tend to slip and stretch easily.

Napa belts are made by Gates. You can go to the Gates corp web site and find the length and part #. Then go to Napa and get the belt. I know this because the air pumps for auto and manual trans cars have different pulley sizes. The automatic is the larger one of the two.
