help! fly wheel removal

just wondering if the bolt is a reverse thead. we tried to unbolt it yesterday. had three people sitting on the block and two people on the 3/4 driver and made a six foot extension and couldn't bugde the damn thing. so the thougth just came to me today that maybe it was a reverse thread.

no it is not. it is a normally threaded nut. left loosey and righty tighty. are you using some sort of flywhel stopper?

It's been a while since I removed one but I don't believe it's a reverse thread. It is tourqued very tight though(I think like 300ft/lbs or something like that, I'm sure I'll be corrected) and a bitch to get off without air tools.

Hi 7knight,

The flywheel nut is not reverse thread. It has locktite on it and is torqued 300+ lbs. Even with a six foot extension you have to "break" the nut loose from the locktite. Goodluck.

Not reveresed Thread, the torque on it I believe is 365 lbs. At this point i think you'll need an air gun.

to remove it w/o airtools, you have two choices, both of which work very well.

1. get a flywheel tooth holder "thingy" - either make one, or get one for $25 from mazdatrix. they call it a flywheel stopper http://www.mazdatrix.com/ftools.htm

2. get a long piece of angle iron, drill two holes so you can attach it, rest the engine on the ground, and the angle iron will hold against the ground so you can undo it.

personally, i borrowed a flywheel stopper from a friend who made one.
