Hello fellas, new member & potenial owner here...
Hello all members of this site, it's nice to have found one that looks so dedicated & has such a large member base. Hopefully my stay here will turn out to be a long one which it has proven to be on the GSXR motorcycle enthusiast web site I have frequented since I started riding one ( gixxer.com) . My name's Sean Soles I'm 21 years old and I live in Las Vegas, Nevada . Being interested in RX7's and currently leaning towards possibly buying one , I figured a great place to start the journey would be on a enthusiast web site such as this one. I have been on two wheels for the past year and a half now ( 2002 Suzuki GSXR 750), as my mode of transportation and recreation. I have owned 2 late model Mustangs ( 5.0's) in the past. First of which was a pretty emerald green/ grey two tone automatic, and more recently I was fortunate enough to come across a metallic maroon / grey two tone 5 speed which when I bought it had a mere 7,800 miles on it. I ended up parting with the latter of the two after having gotten into a small fender bender and the car being nearly destroyed by the half *** body shop that was entrusted to fix it. Recently I had been shooting around the idea of picking myself up a car, something more practical then a bike for daily trans and so fourth and basically came to the conclusion that : A. Having been on the bike for a while now I surely need to pick something up that moves, B. I am not in the market for a new car that looses 1/3 of it's value in the first year, C. I need something that while peppy will not pose serious mechanical problems in the process, D. What if anything is there available to me that not every last person on the street is driving, E. what can I buy for roughly 8-15 thousand dollars that meets that criteria ....
With that said, I found myself looking at Buick Grand Nationals and of course Mazda RX7s especially being I have a fondness for turbo cars The cars are completely different most would say, and that they really are. I appreciate both of them for different and the same reasons. For the money I am looking to spend, I am finding some cherry bone stock 87' GN's ( the year I'd like to pick up they come factory intercooled) with anywhere from 45-65 thousand miles and then you have the 93-94 twin turbo RX7's having roughly 40-50 thousand miles on them...Of the two cars I without a doubt dig the RX7 more, and I have always wanted a import car at that....Yet mechanical reliability has been detering me from deciding on one ..... Spoke to a friend of mine about the car who's a all around car nut and he suggests that as great of a design the motor is, the what he calls " Apex seal " in the motor has a tendancy to go bad at give or take 50,000 miles.... and when it does, it leaves you doing a complete rebuild on the car. He estimated the cost of this at being some 2,500 dollars or so and furthermore the lack of shops capable of doing it should be something to consider as well. Keeping this in mind I have found it somewhat ironic that the RX7's I am seeing listed in the local paper have just under 50,000 miles on them... Two cherry 93' touring edition twin turbo's with 44 & 45 thousand miles.... both of which selling for roughly 15 thousand dollars... Guys what I really wonder is, this Apex seal problem my friend touched on...is it that big of a problem, you know one of those things thats inevitable to happen? I found it a little odd to see those cars in the paper both with right under 50 thousand miles, or just about ya know.... kind of like the owners know better? As the days go on I find myself more and more in love with these RX7's, but Im scared to get myself into a big mess in the process... I've made some bad decisions before and I hate to make another. Can you guys give me some heads up, shoot me in the right direction, let me know if there is any way to determine the chances of a major rebuild, let me know what I should be paying if and when I do make the decision and so fourth? Well, until some responses thanks in advance and I look forward to becoming a active member here. See ya guys

This should help you out a bunch...

As far as finding a RX-7, I was able to snag a RX-7 with a FRESH rebuilt (had ~200mi on the turbos, clutch, and motor when I 1st got it) for ~$16k. Just take your time, and keep reading anything and everything about RX-7s.
