Heat Soak? Can anyone compare Stock vs. Aftermarket?
anyone have some information on the heat soak of the stock SMIC and an after market one? Like temp changes overall, time for temperature changes etc. For a project im working on. I know that the aftermarket will be better, obviously, but i want to know some numbers to see if i can get away with the stocker for my project.
I don't think I've ever seen hard data. You can always go to work with some thermocouples
.
Pretty much any SMIC is going to be prone to heat soak, no matter if it's aftermarket or not. The biggest thing really is how well it works when the car is moving and there's airflow through it. A more efficient core can remove more heat from the compressed air coming from the turbo, and hopefully do it with less of a pressure drop.
But, any large hunk of aluminum in a hot space will heat soak - no two ways about it.

check out the other parts, as i recal they did a fair amount of track testing and writeups on that and this may be as close as youll get

^IIRC, M2 medium flowed well, had the least pressure drop, and was pretty efficient, but M2 large was superior for prolonged track sessions (heat soak). Of course you have to move the battery and do some plumbing for the latter. I don't think they did testing with anything other than OEM, Mazdaspeed and the M2 choices.
