Healthy Engine?

I have a 3rd gen Rx7, just got it about month ago

I was wondering how you can tell if your engine is healthy or not...

And how can you improve the health of your engine if it is not as healthy as it should be?

Does a compressions test on a rotary differ from a compression test on a Cylinder engine? If so how,

Is there anyway to perform a compression test myself? Or is it complicated...

Or do i have to take it to a garage/proffesional?
