Headlight bulbs

I wanted to see what current FD owners are using as far as Headlight bulbs. I've done my search but the threads are dated. I figured with advanced light bulbs there should be better.
I'm looking for drop in bulbs but better lighting.

There are a handful of decent solutions, just depends on what you want to spend. If you just want to swap out the bulb, go to Autozone and get the Silverstars for a marginal improvement.

If you want a better upgrade, Pettit has a nice kit for a decent price - https://pettitracing.com/collections...adlight-kit-fd

Top of the line is probably the Sakebomb, although I no longer see them on their website. RX-Lights makes a similar kit - https://rx-lights.com/shop/ols/produ...led-projectors

If you are handy, there are a few threads on here that detail how to build your own. IE buy the housing, modify and retrofit HID kit yourself. Would probably cost under $300. https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generati...rofit-1148884/

I appreciate the suggestions. Just looking for minimal investment. The down side of bulbs are that they have a short life span... Sake bomb were nice but I don't think that they are available either.

Drop-in completely p n p…Sylvania Silverstars bulbs. And a noticeable improvement. Looks like about $50 for a pair now. Mine have been in for at least 15 years, but then I don’t drive the car a lot at night.

I put the sylvania silverstar bulbs in and was completely disappointed. I even followed the headlight alignment procedure in the shop manual and it was barely a difference. I took a picture of the old vs new bulbs and it was eh. I deleted the picture so I don't have it!

That's what most people say. I called philips and they tell me the night guide bulbs are better. Might try those but they are sold individually.

i saw a post a couple weeks ago of someone making their own halogen lights. The housings and hid units had a total of 200 for everything. I am going that route.

I've been using Sylvania SilverStar Ultra headlight bulbs for the past 5 years, but I don't drive the car at night much either. Previously, I had PIAA bulbs in the car for a long time until one day I finally noticed that they had grown dim with time and use.

I have tried Silver Stars but they don't last very long. I switched to HID bulbs but they don't give a good pattern with the stock headlamp lenses and the HID bulbs don't last either. So I went LED and absolutely love them! The technology has improved greatly. I now have good lighting and the low and high beams work well with the stock lenses without messing up the projection patterns. Another plus is it uses a fraction of the voltage.

There are exceptions, but I think many go HID or LED for the cool factor more than any other reason. And if I hadn’t grown up with “sealed beams” and remember when halogen was hi-tech, maybe I be the same way.
As I recall there was no WOW factor when I switched to Silverstars, and to other drivers they still look stock. But they were better performing imo, and if the OP wants something pnp, that’s the only option out there afaik.

Silverstar elements run at a higher temperature than "normal" sealed beam headlights. That's why they are a bit brighter than normal sealed beams. As a result, they are more susceptible to higher-than-normal voltage and thus may burn out more quickly.

FWIW, I tried LEDs and they were pretty bad as stock replacements. LEDs just don't work well in reflector housings, and the RX's pattern is pretty grim anyway. But they worked great in my Subie's projectors as an upgrade from halogen. Your lumens may vary.
