having hard time with modifed car insurance

Hey guys,

I am having a really difficult time getting my 20b widebody rx7 insured in NY.
I have tried the usual collector car companies (grundy, hagerty or amic) but they either will not write the policy or limit the use of the vehicle to car shows and parades...

Does anyone have any suggestions on insurance companies that do not severely limit you on the use of the vehicle while providing agreed coverage. I am trying to do this legit, I can get coverage with grundy and just disobey the limitation policy but I am worried that I won't get covered incase of a collision or something.

I am very surprised Haggerty is giving you a hard time.

Curious how much you are trying to insure it for... $40K+? How many miles are on it?

I have my 20B insured with American Auto Collectors:

Best Collectors Insurance Companies | Classic Car Insurance Rates & Quotes | Americans Collectors Insurance | www.americancollectors.com | American Collectors

I have an agreed to value policy. No hassle, sent them pics and a list of the mods with my agreed to value and there was no problem. 3,500 mile limit with going to shows, etc. Give them a call.

I believe Grundy has no mile limit.

However both Grundy and haggardy only let you drive the car to shows and for pleasure. You can't take it to work or for errands, you must have a second car and it must be garage kept.

This makes sense to me since it's collectors car insurance. What exactly is the problem? If you don't want a mileage limitation go with Grundy. My issue was I wanted to drive my car anywhere including work. I now insure all of my cars through Geico. it's very cheap since they know I have a daily driver and barely drive the sports cars.

Give NCM a call and chat with them? Its through the Corvette Museum here in KY. Corvette Insurance | Collector Car Insurance | Classic Car Insurance | National Corvette Museum Insurance | Corvette Insurance | Collector Car Insurance | Classic Car Insurance | National Corvette Museum Insurance They will ensure any car "of collectible nature". I've got both my FD and 996TT insured through them. My current restrictions are 6k/yr, up to two days/week driven to work, and as many cruises / car shows as Id like. You do have to do the standard providing pictures, prove you have a DD, list what garage its stored in, etc.

thanks for the replies guys,

I am not necessarily having a hard time insuring the vehicle, I am having a hard time insuring the vehicle without driving limitations. Hagerty and Grundy will insure me, but would only allow me to bring the car to shows apparently (which doesn't suit me as I'm not a car show guy)

@bryan, your policy is exactly what I am looking for! the other companies would not even allow you to take the car to a friends house. I will check them out.

I thought the Grundy and haggardy policies say pleasure driving is allowed. It can't only be for car shows...

I had the corvette museum insurance too its a little pricey.

Why not call geico or your regular insurance company for a quote. What do you have against that?

Try American National (ANPAC) also. They will do declared values without many restrictions.

geico, progressive, esurance and all the vanilla companies will not do agreed value and would only give additional insurance up to $5k in value (which barely covers anything)

However, NCM are not licensed to insure NY, so that's a bummer. However, they refered me to amig (which is geico's classic division, wouldn't write the policy due to it having engine modifications)

I did find a barret-jackson endorsed insurance company that would allow occasional drives to work, which is the same policy as NCM. Hagerty and Grundy will not allow occasional drives to work, I've called on multiple occasions asking if I were allowed to take the car to the movies or to a friends house, etc... and they always replied with "I wouldn't do that, or It would not be covered if it was damaged..."

The cost is not the issue for me, right now I already pay a ridiculous $3600 a year for a daily driver + the rx7 with progressive (no claims no violations). Most classic car insurances would give me way better coverage + cheaper premiums anyways.

The only restriction that is in the contract for me is 4000-5000 miles a year (which they have yet to check and I set for premiums) and I am usually under that mileage anyways. $500 a year in premiums with a declared value of $22k. I would shy away from a company who won't let you drive the car as you intended. If you can't enjoy the car why even have it?

These mileage limitations suck. I built mine to be driven often. Hell I've put 4k on mine in 2 months.

I have had $30K agreed value, unlimited mileage coverage with Hagerty for 5 years. I had to provide proof that I have a daily driver. My policy excludes damages arising from going to the track or even parking the car on the infield of a track even if I am not a participant. The market conditions must have changed in the past few years.

This is not true, I have had agreed price policies with Progressive on both my EG Civic and RB 240sx. I also have Progressive now with my FD which is an actual cash value policy with a 10k addition for custom parts and equipment.

With that said, if you have a highly modified FD with a 20b and wide body Progressive would NOT be the way to go. I will be looking into other carriers when my policy renews in June.

100% not true. I have mine ensured for a 35K value through American Family Collector Car Insurance. I had Hagerty previously and the main issue was most bigger companies would not give Collector Car Insurance to vehicles under 20 years old. Not an issue anymore. I am on a 10K year limit, which I will never hit, but the agreement only specifies that this is not my daily driver. I can drive it to work and such occasionally.

@04g35s - you must have a good agent because I called every main stream company and they all refered me to hagerty.

Anyways, I am currently dealing with TDC (barrett jackson endorsed insurance) which uses American Modern (AMIG) as their underwriters and they are currently evaluating the value of my vehicle. This is the same company that geico uses, however when I first spoke with the agents at geico, they seem to have no clue what they are doing, so they told me my car could not be insured with AMIG.

They have offered me a stated value for the meantime and I would be able to switch to an agreed value once the build is complete.

To qualify, you need 100k/300k insurance for your daily driven vehicle, 1 daily driven vehicle per family member in household with license, locked garage for your insured vehicle and get this, they might accept you if you have a clean record at the age of 20. Most companies require a minimum age of 25.

I think you need to talk to a different progressive rep...

Mine lets me add on however much I want to be covered for all my modifications. also $3600 a year seems high for just the rx7 and a daily.

Its not just the agent but having the knowledge of what you looking for and what is required to properly insure your custom vehicle. I have been in the insurance adjusting field for over 10 years and handled 50-60 custom cars and motorcycle for Progressive alone.

That being said Insurance laws and regulations differ from state to state so to say only rule works for all companies would be false.

I would defiantly look into a new progressive agent or do your research and quote your own policy on Progressive.com.

This thread has me rethinking my GRUNDY policy. I may need to check it more closely. I knew about the "no drive to work" rules, but was not aware you could be dinged for a Saturday night drive to a friends house. If you were heading to a friends house, you could always say you were taking it there "for service" and the two of you planned to work on it, no? Someone also told me that Hagerty or Grundy have a clause in their policy that states if you head to a track event, even just to WATCH, and your car gets damaged in the parking lot that your not covered. Not sure if that's correct or not, but if it IS, that's just WRONG!

im also having the same issue. Im glad this topic is brought up. I've also talk with grundy but about the mvp program they have, so i can i do all cars with the my 93 rx7 as a collector but they would only do the rx7 and then i had to wait 2 months in order to issue the other 2. Anybody have an idea who else would do a a bundle package. I'm currently with geico but just my truck and the 91 rx7 as my daily I'm paying close to 1600$ a year. when i called grundy the 93 was only 350 a year but they wouldn't quote me on the other 2. anyways any input would help thanks guys

For those who are unsure about their policy, I've gotten this list from many of the classic car companies.

Just got off live chat with progressive and they did indeed offer a stated coverage amount of $50,000 for my car. No agreed value coverage. They said no when I went in person, so I guess it depends on the agent you get. However, they want $2852 / year for the coverage for just the RX7.

AMIG, offered me a stated $40,000 coverage during the time in the bodyshop, and then converted into an agreed coverage after the build is complete for $800ish / year. I am probably going to go with AMIG.

@rxbaby7 - try progressive, 04g35s is right, however if they say no, just go to another agent or try the live chat. I have my quote saved.
