PS/AC Removal

I removed both shortly after purchasing the car. I dont regret it a bit. I feel the benefits outweigh the "inconvenience." You get more air to the radiator with the AC condensor out of the way and you get amazing feed back from the tires/suspension without the PS. Also you drop a decent amount of weight, always a good thing, and you get better airflow around the motor. The only drawback is when parking or in very slow speed situations the steering wheel can be a bit "stubborn" to turn, well that is for you girlie boys out there. Me I have no trouble with it. Like I said, no regrets here. But I remove anything i see fit to lighten the car, I can deal with a bit less "civilized" car for some extra performance. Hope this helps some with your decision.

I Think U Should Think About That Urself Man. Will U Miss That Cold Air In The Summer? I Know I Would. And As For The Power Steering I Drove Some Old Cars Without It And I Really Missed That, Helps Alot

It was also my first mod when I bought my car along with the A/C, it gave me so MUCH more room on that side of the engine. My steering wheel is so smooth, even when the car is standing still, I don't know if it's because I have light wheels or not because I drove another FD w/o P/S and the wheel was stiff as a rock when it was at a stop. So no I don't regret removing my P/S, I actually love it.

On the PS, not a bit.... with a properly converted rack, it's awesome. On the AC, I was sceptical about removing it, but it hasn't worked for two summers since I ditched the PS, and I haven't been motivated to re-engineer the belt tensioner, so i gues i don't need it.

Im not sure what to say for the fact that I havent driven my car without it yet. I have heard that if you loop it, it still feels like you have p/s. This is also from a guy that drives a 91 MR2. I know that I dont plan on putting the p/s or a/c back in my car for the fact that I dont like a/c and that the bracket for both of them is way to big.

i ditched ps in 1999 and have 40,000 miles on my fd since. it's my favorite mod. and, no, it doesn't feel like ps if you loop the lines at the rack.

one mistake some make is to remove the belt and drive the car thinking they have manual steering. nope. you have power steering without any assist, sort of like driving a dump truck. you need to gut it to get to manual.

you will love it,

howard coleman

How do you gut it?

Also I read a thread once I think by jimlab were he sent his rack away and had it converted to a full manual rack.

That could be cool.

I ditched mine the first week I bought the car. I love it without a/c and p/s. The engine bay looks cleaner too

If you are going to remove the P/S, I would send the rack to Maval Gear to have it fully converted to manual operation. Then again, I think Howard just looped his and has apparently been fine for 40k miles, so YMMV....

I have been on the fence for this operation for almost a year. The fact that I still like to auto-x a few times a year for Mazdamotorsports membership is one of the factors holding me back. The other factor is that, even though I work out regularly and am muscular for my size, I'm still only a 5'7" 125 pounder. I know most of you non-P/S guys are quite a bit bigger. Then again, I seemed to handle my '83 626 and '79 RX-7 just fine without P/S.

That's what I, Damian, Jim, and possible Howard have done. Got a converted rack from Maval Gear. What Howard is refering to is what Maval does... welds the quil shaft, drains and greases the rack, plugs the holes for the PS loop. it's better than just using a loop line and leaving the PS fluid and removing the pump.

Bump to this thread. I'm interested in an actual customized manual rack and what the cost would be. I have my A/C system removed and for a short period had the P/S removed. IIRC, it was the loop way that most people do(my mech. did it). I'm a fairly strong person and didnt find parking and slow speed turns to be a problem. But when trying to drive the car hard in tight turns was tough, such as autox. My times went down! I felt the feedback was too much on anything other that clean surface. Going through turns, the smallest irregularities in the road and the steering wheel would fight big time. The faster I went the the more the force of the feedback, such as high speed sweepers.

I liked the fact, as stated in previous posts, that there was less weight, less drag on the engine minus the pulley, more air to the engine and changing plugs is easier. I remember somepeople had put the manual rack from the FC on the FD, but the results werent that great( IIRC, it had something to do with the turning radius???) Correct me if I'm wrong, but a customized manual rack is the way to go, because a power steering rack without the fluid isnt the same???? If someone would care to explain more, I'd appreciate it.

Any address, website and/or phone number for Maval Gear???

Damn T, you are a skinny S.O.B.! I check in at 5'6 and 185 and love my p/s delete.

I can email you workout and diet plans if you promise to dyno your car at 18 psi on c16
