Has anyone removed airbag wiring?

I'm separating out the airbag wiring from the harness on the inside of the firewall and I have a couple questions.

On the pass and drivers side of the body, right near where the dash bolts up on the ends there are two grounds on each side. Looking at the body electrical manual on pages Z-110 and Z-111 it seems that these grounds are airbag only grounds.

Anyone have any experience here? Can all the harnesses with the blue covering be removed? The car will have no sensors, no diagnostic module, no airbag.

I have the dash, heater, AC and blower motor out right now, access is great.

you can just do what I did and let your tires rub through the wires from having broken springs boots lol.

I do believe Mazda kept the WHOLE airbag system separate from the rest of the wiring in the car. They went for uber-no-kidding-reliable with the system - having an airbag accidentally deploy could easily result in a wreck.

I would be VERY surprised if those grounds were for anything but the airbag system.

The ones on the sides, anyway. I seem to remember having to cut a couple wires towards the center of the dash where there were a couple connections to the underdash harness. It's been quite awhile since I did this.

Considering that the SRS ECU has to get power from somewhere, I'd be surprised if there weren't a couple connections to other harnesses. I'd have to check the manual, though.

I'm with you Jim, when I removed my airbag the sides were grounded by themselves, but i had to clip wires going to the dash warning, the diagnostic connector and power. I think that was it. I hope this helps, if you are confused go to www.iluvmyrx7.com and go to wiring diagrams, then airbag system.

I just pulled out my entire electrical system to modify it all for my v8 swap. I just started to pull the airbag stuff and was a bit confused by the few wires that trace back to the underhood harness. There is a green/orange stripe wire that connects via plug to the blue airbag harness in the center of the firewall harness under the dash. This wire traces back through a plug on the side of the fuse box and then under the hood. What does that go to and why?

Then, down by the fuse box, there are the orange/blue airbag plug that comes from underhood and go up to the airbag computer (i think thats what that black box screwed to the a/c system on the driver side). These plugs send a white/blue stripe wire and two green/orange stripe wires under the hood. What do those go to and why? I'm guessing that the white one goes to the power. Do all the green ones go to the diagnostic port or something?

And that black box on the a/c can be unpluged and pulled out all together, yes?

If you don't happen to know where they go, would it mess anything else up on the car if I just cut/disconnected them?

I'll keep cutting loom away and see what I can find out at the least.

You can pull everything out. There is 4 total air bag sensors. One by each oil cooler, one by the hood latch and one in the very center inside behind the dash and right below the windshield. The external wires all meet and connect by the ABS pump, you can disconnect them and snake it all the wires and sensors out.
Then you have have the wires that go into the cabin and connect to the center sensor and then to the steering wheel. Pretty straight forward.

There is four trust me Jim, I'll even take a picture for you. As far as the wiring goes, I'm just basing that of memory, but the blue and orange wires are right next to where my ABS pump used to be. I suggest you look harder for that extra sensor.

On my 93 r1 there were four sensors--right where glassman says they are. Is there supposed to be a central Airbag computer or something? If there is, I'm not seeing one.

With all 4 of the sensors pulled, will that remove the airbag warning on the console? If not, how do I do that (the correct way).

And the diagnostic module, that is used by other parts of the electrical system as well and should be left in the car, yes?

I've had the dash completely out of my car and I can show you a picture with the three sensors, wiring, and SRS computer. Maybe other years had an additional sensor, but not my '95.

Yes the centeral computer is located to the right of the driver under the dash by the pedals and looks like this.

Well Jim, as always you are special!

They probably removed it for the 94 or 95's to reduce weight or something.

I can pull that computer out and I will have no ill effects from doing so?

I figured that it had some other purposes as well. From looking closer at the wiring diagram, I guess it looks like it just connects the airbags to a bunch of other parts of the electrical.

Or more likely, it was improved, like several other components including the ABS unit.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the help. That just the info I was looking for! Now I can get on to pulling the ABS and other useless Mazda bits.

I removed all the airbag sensors, wiring, module, etc from a 93 R1 (4 sensors, 3 front 1 on the center of the firewall). I didn't have to cut any wires, everything unplugged but I did have to cut some electrical tape and wiring loom cover to separate the airbag harness from the body harness. Once you have the heater core, AC evap and blower motor out your looking at a pretty simple job.

Solve the airbag light by removing the bulb.

The big labor here is removing the HVAC system to get to the airbag wiring behind it.
